twilight. the books are great. the films are dreadful
Agree!
I actually really enjoy the films and the books!
An older one… Captain Corellis Mandolin
THIS!! The film was so superficial compared to the book! It made me so cross!
P.s. I love you – book’s brill, film not so much!
100%. Loved the book so much. Bitterly disappointed with the film
Great minds… the film was ruined by how she got the letters…and also not being set in Ireland. Xx
And let’s not even mention Gerard Butler’s accent ?
I know. He should have just stuck with his own xx
Exactly! I’d have been ok with that rather than the terrible Irish one he tried.
I know. ? I had advanced screening tickets (was to review the movie before it came out) to the movie cause I loved the book so much. Me and my mum went to it, we were both so disappointed cause she loves the book too.. and on that note. Love Rosie aka where rainbows end… also a let down xx
Ah it was such a shame. I had such high hopes. Such an amazing, emotional book reduced to that!
I wasn’t really a fan of Gerard butler but really couldn’t take to the female lead or the part played by Harry connick jnr either.
P.s I love you. One of my favourite books, film was awful xx
Girl on a train
Me before you
I still haven’t watched the film because I loved the book and worry the film will ruin it for me. Think I’ll leave it then ?
when the book says she’s short of money and dresses quirkily and in the film has expensive irregular choice shoes on when she’s sat on a wall swinging her feet and it’s blatantly obvious they are it wasn’t quite realistic and where the book describes her clothing for example when they went to the wedding the film was nothing like it but then again I am picky lol x
Harry Potter, girl on the train, one day,
????????????
Ethan keeps asking to watch Harry Potter.. I keep saying no.. I’d rather he read it ?
Have you read the girl with all the gifts? I gave my copy to a student but it’s really good!
No! But we have the film I think, not watched it yet I’ll keep a look out for book! Wanting to read the Phillip Pullman books too x
@Becca I have the new one, I’ve got two copies! I’ll bring one tomorrow!
Ooh thankyou!! Xx
Harry Potter!!
The time travelers wife. X
All of them
If you go to the original source, you will always appreciate the whole scenario much more; the author, the quality of writing and the story that is told. A film is only ever a synopsis of a much larger book. That isn’t to say that there haven’t been good adaptations, but they will never be fully appreciated if the book hasn’t been read in the first place.
Besides, reading a book allows you to exercise your own imagination and feelings rather than having those dictated to you or manipulated.
The only film I ever thought was better than the book was Legally Blonde
The Horse Whisperer
Room
Harry Potter. Love the films but they’re not close to the books. Angels & Demons & Da Vinci Code. I couldn’t even watch the films! They just ruined it!
My sisters keeper. The book is amazing and the film made me so angry
Totally agree!
yes…I couldn’t believe how they changed the ending….destroyed the whole point of the story in my opinion.
To Kill a Mockingbird – book is much better
Agree
So so so agree
The film version of Shawshank Redemption is miles better than the book.
Wasn’t it a short story more than a book?
@Amy yes by Stephen King.
It’s a novella
I thought I’d read that somewhere, impressed with my useless memory as I couldn’t even remember who wrote it ? great film. Will likely never read the novella ?
I read it because it was in the same book (Different Seasons) as The Body, which became Stand By Me, which is one of my favourite films. I do think Shawshank Redemption the film certainly had a much better ending than the book.
All books are better than the films. Especially the Hannibal Lecter books, Harry Potter series and The Time Travellers Wife.
The one close to an exception is Twilight. I couldn’t finish the first book. I like the films ?
The twilight books are awful!
The Girl With All The Gifts. Film was awful
Ps I love you.. book every time… Marley and me
Forrest Gump the movie is miles better than the book! It comes down to how loveable Forrest is in the movie, less so in the book.
I thought the opposite of Forrest Gump because the book ends way before the film ends. They tacked on a sugary sweet ending with Forrest and Jenny and its some time since I read the book but I think Jenny just drifted in and out of Forrest’s life and at the end of the book he never saw her again.
All of them! ?
Q&A, which is the book Slumdog Millionaire is based on. The film is brilliant, loved it, but the book is even better. Much more to the story.
I’d also like to know this!
One exception is the Peter Jackson Lord of the rings films I think. I love the books, but admit they can be a bit of a slog, and he did a very good job with the films. Didn’t like the more recent hobbit films as much, they were just a money making operation, they should have been one film. But generally I prefer the books, especially Harry Potter
Eat, Pray, Love. Adored the book, hated the film. Turned into a watery chick flick and lost all of the struggle and spirituality. Was gutted!
The Girl on the train
The list
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Here’s a strange one. I loved the millennium trilogy books. Hard going but totally great stories. The Scandinavian films, with subtitles, were actually really good but the Hollywood remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was abismal, terrible! Someone should be shot for agreeing to produce such crap. I’ll never understand why the Americans didn’t just put the Scandinavian films, complete with subtitles, on general release ?
Apparently subtitled films just don’t do well in the US, they just can’t be bothered to read them. Shame really, like you say the Swedish originals are way better.
Not a film but a TV series, Anne of green gables. It used to be on every Christmas eve, day and new years eve. Cried every time, especially when her grandad died ??
I have this on DVD box set ??????????
@Sharon I must buy it I haven’t watched it since I was 12
@Suzy I fill up as soon as it starts ?
Agreed! Done so well!
The hunger games series too
The kite runner
We call it Reelbook. We are in Murwillumbah, Australia.
The only film I’ve ever enjoyed more than a book is me before you. I absolutely adored the book it stuck with me for months & even now I get goosebumps thinking of it but reading the book again after watching the film I liked the changes in the film & the way it was done more than I had enjoyed reading the book & I must say it was hard to top.
I was in floods of tears from the minute she appeared in her red dress… I agree, the film.was a great representation of the book. xx
Twilight films are better than the books I reckon
Me before you, Harry Potter, the colour purple
harry potter
I think generally books are always better, a tiny few exceptions, but I really like books more.
Girl on the Train
The Help
American Psycho. Such a clever book, really enjoyed reading it. But sorry, Christian Bale is just not my Patrick Bateman.
Twilight books were better than the film, freedom writers movie was better than the book and I also preferred the movie for a walk to remember. The book still made me cry but the film is my favourite
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
I dont think any film has been better than a book in my opinion. Harry potter books are amaxing. Films are ok but loads left out. Twilight books where good. Films ok. Loved hunger games books and quite happy with the films in comparison. Ive recently read the first dexter book which i liked. And loved the first few seasons of the tv series. I have red sparrow on my tbr pile as i loved the film.
Not a film but a TV series – Strike, cuckoo’s calling. I thought the TV series was awful. Changed the story up quite a lot and you really didnt get a sense of who Strike was
There’s only one film I have seen that was better than the book & that was A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. I saw the film first, then read the book & was disappointed with the book. Normally it’s the other way round for me xx
Same, it’s my favourite movie and when I read the book I found it quite poorly written x
@Sally agreed. The film is beautiful xx
Agreed.
Same with The Notebook for me too, was very disappointed with the writing.
Safe Haven by him however was brilliant. X
@Leanne agree with that totally. Love Safe Haven xx
Girl on a train
Book thief
The Beach
Charlotte Gray, I almost walked out of the cinema I was so outraged!!!
Jack reacher
The Revenant, the film is pretty much a different story! And Trainspotting, I do love the film but way more happens in the book that doesn’t even get a mention
Girl on the train, the film was awful, book unable to put down
Oh and also Jack Reacher! I’ve read nearly all the books and love them but everything about the movie was wrong!
Love the film PS I Love You, hated the book. Same with Lord of the Rings. The Maze Runner movie has to be better than the book by default as nothing could be worse.
Generally prefer the book to the film though.
I hated the film PS I Love you but like the book
The vast majority of films don’t live up to the books in my opinion, there’s been some that have been pretty good (memoirs of a geisha, the shawshank redemption etc) but overall if I absolutely loved a book I’ll probably avoid the movie or at least try to see it as a completely separate thing
I know it’s not a film yet, but the rights have been bought to make Eleanor Oliphant! Eeeek I’m not sure I’d want to watch the film because I don’t think they’ll do it justice
Legally blonde is way better as a movie than the book. Books more often than not are better.
Stephen King books and film adaptations are usually equally as brilliant!
The exception being the really bad series they made based on 11-22-63
Fight Club, the film is way better, the book is virtually a short story!
Gone Girl
I am that person who says, “but she has brown hair”, then hates the film forever more!
I thought Stephen’s Kings Misery was as good a film as the book was.
So far the book has always been better than the film, I hate it when all the details are missed or they change the characters and story ☹️
Hunger games books much better than films in my opinion
I think the book is always better but there are many films that do a good job of dramatising them.
I read sleeping with the enemy years ago and it’s one of the few movies that have been as good as the book. They occasionally get it right.
Divergent, Hunger Games & Harry Potter
Miss peregrines school for peculiar children loved all the books thought the film was crap
I have the book in my to be read pile, I enjoyed the movie so I’m looking forward to the book now ?
The books were amazing I was hooked for weeks..i Read the books first then watched the film I hope you enjoy them as much as I did ?
I love the peculiar so right up my alley ?
One Day!
All books ?
Misery by Stephen King.
Room
The Kite Runner
Ella Enchanted, book was a wonderful teenage romantic fantasy but film was rubbish
As much as I love the films, Harry Potter.
Though I have to say, most times the books are better than the films x
Felicia’s Journey
Memoirs of a Geisha
Girl on the train book is so much better than the film
