THIS!! The film was so superficial compared to the book! It made me so cross!

100%. Loved the book so much. Bitterly disappointed with the film

1
Julianne

Great minds… the film was ruined by how she got the letters…and also not being set in Ireland. Xx

1
Louise

And let’s not even mention Gerard Butler’s accent ?

1
Julianne

I know. He should have just stuck with his own xx

0
Louise

Exactly! I’d have been ok with that rather than the terrible Irish one he tried.

0
Julianne

I know. ? I had advanced screening tickets (was to review the movie before it came out) to the movie cause I loved the book so much. Me and my mum went to it, we were both so disappointed cause she loves the book too.. and on that note. Love Rosie aka where rainbows end… also a let down xx

0
Louise

Ah it was such a shame. I had such high hopes. Such an amazing, emotional book reduced to that!

1
Lyndsay

I wasn’t really a fan of Gerard butler but really couldn’t take to the female lead or the part played by Harry connick jnr either.

1

P.s I love you. One of my favourite books, film was awful xx

I still haven’t watched the film because I loved the book and worry the film will ruin it for me. Think I’ll leave it then ?

1

when the book says she’s short of money and dresses quirkily and in the film has expensive irregular choice shoes on when she’s sat on a wall swinging her feet and it’s blatantly obvious they are it wasn’t quite realistic and where the book describes her clothing for example when they went to the wedding the film was nothing like it but then again I am picky lol x

If you go to the original source, you will always appreciate the whole scenario much more; the author, the quality of writing and the story that is told. A film is only ever a synopsis of a much larger book. That isn’t to say that there haven’t been good adaptations, but they will never be fully appreciated if the book hasn’t been read in the first place.

1
Marina

Besides, reading a book allows you to exercise your own imagination and feelings rather than having those dictated to you or manipulated.

Wasn’t it a short story more than a book?

0
Rheanna

@Amy yes by Stephen King.

0
Rheanna

It’s a novella

0
Amy

I thought I’d read that somewhere, impressed with my useless memory as I couldn’t even remember who wrote it ? great film. Will likely never read the novella ?

1
Helena

I read it because it was in the same book (Different Seasons) as The Body, which became Stand By Me, which is one of my favourite films. I do think Shawshank Redemption the film certainly had a much better ending than the book.

0
Amy

All books are better than the films. Especially the Hannibal Lecter books, Harry Potter series and The Time Travellers Wife.
The one close to an exception is Twilight. I couldn’t finish the first book. I like the films ?

Forrest Gump the movie is miles better than the book! It comes down to how loveable Forrest is in the movie, less so in the book.

2
Reply
Carol

I thought the opposite of Forrest Gump because the book ends way before the film ends. They tacked on a sugary sweet ending with Forrest and Jenny and its some time since I read the book but I think Jenny just drifted in and out of Forrest’s life and at the end of the book he never saw her again.

Q&A, which is the book Slumdog Millionaire is based on. The film is brilliant, loved it, but the book is even better. Much more to the story.

One exception is the Peter Jackson Lord of the rings films I think. I love the books, but admit they can be a bit of a slog, and he did a very good job with the films. Didn’t like the more recent hobbit films as much, they were just a money making operation, they should have been one film. But generally I prefer the books, especially Harry Potter

Here’s a strange one. I loved the millennium trilogy books. Hard going but totally great stories. The Scandinavian films, with subtitles, were actually really good but the Hollywood remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was abismal, terrible! Someone should be shot for agreeing to produce such crap. I’ll never understand why the Americans didn’t just put the Scandinavian films, complete with subtitles, on general release ?

Chantel

Apparently subtitled films just don’t do well in the US, they just can’t be bothered to read them. Shame really, like you say the Swedish originals are way better.

Not a film but a TV series, Anne of green gables. It used to be on every Christmas eve, day and new years eve. Cried every time, especially when her grandad died ??

The only film I’ve ever enjoyed more than a book is me before you. I absolutely adored the book it stuck with me for months & even now I get goosebumps thinking of it but reading the book again after watching the film I liked the changes in the film & the way it was done more than I had enjoyed reading the book & I must say it was hard to top.

I have red sparrow on my tbr pile as i loved the film.

The vast majority of films don’t live up to the books in my opinion, there’s been some that have been pretty good (memoirs of a geisha, the shawshank redemption etc) but overall if I absolutely loved a book I’ll probably avoid the movie or at least try to see it as a completely separate thing
