The secret garden or a little princess

Which version though? I have never seen a good or accurate version of A Little Princess.

0
Kerry

@Nicky I’ve only seen the 1995 movie version and I liked it

PollyQuestion author

I grew up when there was a series of the secret garden and adored it (and the book!) and my kids loved the little princess ?

0
Nicky

@Kerry I think that one is the best. I have seen awful versions where the father turns up alive and it just annoys me that they would change such a vital part of the book for a so-called happy ending. When actually, reading it as a child myself, part of its charm was that she actually was a little girl by herself and she came out on top. (OK, with help in the end). 🙂
Try watching the Shirley Temple version though… great film nonetheless.

1
Paige

I will always love the Shirley Temple version of The Little Princess. I’m old.

0
Nicky

@Paige Oh me too. I loved it as a child but haven’t seen it as an adult. I wonder if it will hold up?

0
Paige

She always holds up for me. Takes me back to my childhood!

@Polly it’s excellent

1

Dennis LeHane is an amazing writer. Gone Baby Gone is good too, as is Shutter Island.

0
Jane

@Lauren and others^: I will second that! Great film, directed by Clint Eastwood. Mystic River won several Academy Awards – best actor(Sean Penn) and best supporting actor (Tim Robbins). Trivia: Dennis Lehane (author) makes a very brief cameo appearance in the parade near film’s end.

Lauren

@Jane it’s been so long since I’ve seen it…now I must watch again soon!

1
Paige

Beautiful film. Amazing cast.

1
Jane

The Book is amazing l hate the film it turns it into a romance and takes out all the ( probably too controversial) part about the hypocrisy within the Catholic church.

Try Simon Birch (based on A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving)

2
PollyQuestion author

@Paige I didn’t know this!! I love A Prayer for Owen Meany (I love most of John Irwin’s books) this suggestion is now up there with shutter island …

1
Paige

It’s a sweet adaptation of it. I love Oliver Platt. And Ashley Judd plays the mother. The little boy that is Simon (Owen) is amazing.
