It’s a mood thing with me, and the same with TV shows. There are times it doesn’t bother me at all and in fact I like it, and then times when I cringe, stop reading or change the channel and stop watching a show I previously loved. Violence against old people, kids and animals is something I can’t stomach.

I don’t mind some gruesome books but some authors tend to overdo it – no real story just blood and gore.

I read mostly crime or psychological thrillers but am known to read the odd Josephine Cox type for a change.

@June if you want gruesome, check out Chelsea Cain’s books. Although I don’t think I’ve read anything to beat Chris Carter’s for gruesome yet

Mo Hayder writes pretty gruesome books… but if the story line is good and it is interesting, the ‘gruesomeness’ (as it were) should enhance & not detract from the book.

The great thing about books is that they are so subjective. My latest book, Death Dolls, I didn’t think is too gruesome but a blogger told me that it flicked a mental switch like when she watched the SAW movies. ?‍♀️

I like them to be gruesome. Got to be well written though and not just put in there for shock value

Nope not into them….. ?Though I don’t mind a tiny bit in relation to the story I like physiological thrillers and crime books it’s the mystery that I enjoy not blood and gore!! x

I don’t mind gore, it’s sadistic cruelty that I don’t like to read about. Most police procedurals bring you in “after the event” so you don’t have to “see” it happening. I can’t bear cruelty to animals in any form so would not read another Chris Carter p, after what happened to the cat in Gallery of the Dead

I don’t like gratuitous gore. Or gratuitous anything, really. I have a vivid imagination. No need to spoon-feed it, just drop me a few subtle clues, I’ll join up the dots.

It depends. Sometimes a story requires details and mood-setting that can only be provided by some graphic violence. But, it certainly can be overdone, and sometimes it is really not necessary. Same goes for sex scenes. Think about Dracula. You can’t really appreciate the horror and the sexual aspects of the character without a detailed description of the seduction and assault on Lucy. How much is too much? Well, eye of the beholder, I suppose.

In my new novel there are some pretty graphic descriptions of the murders committed by the serial killer. In order for the reader to get inside his mind and to understand how the police are working to catch him based on help from an FBI profiler, so having all the information about the murders is rather essential to the story. I hope none of my readers are too creeped out by the graphic scenes, and so far I have not seen that in any of the feedback and reviews, but I always knew it was a potential issue.

if anyone is creeped out then are they really a serious crime fiction addict? Lol

Kevin

True, Mandy – but not all readers are “addicts.” LOL ??

just bought crow girl which is suppose to be very gruesome. had looked at it a few times and wondered if it might be to much but had some excellent review along with some that said it was to much.

There is a difference between gratuitous-gruesome and realistic-in-context. Sometimes stories need gritty realism as part of the narrative and character development (or past) of the protagonist.

I had this quote in a review: “Initially repelled by the violence in this novel, I felt, as in Stieg Larsson’s novels, the visceral satisfaction of seeing justice meted out to the abusers of women.”
