Stephen King could scare me if he wasn’t so long-winded that my brain wanders. Koontz actually is the only author that can make me consider sleeping with the light on. ?

My suggestion would be to start with his older books. I started my love of this genre with him and Steven King back in the 70’s. I could never get enough. I have to admit I haven’t read many of his newer books but would definitely recommend any of his older stuff.
