Contains what is still, i think, one of the most beautiful phrases ever written. “The smell of her hair, the taste of her mouth, the feeling of her skin seemed to have got inside him, or into the air all round him. She had become a physical necessity”.
I tend to pick books up to read, get to a certain part and find it’s not as interesting as it was when I purchased it and then a year or more will go by and then I pick it up and can’t put it down :).
I have two serious interests. Genealogy and reading, and in no particular order–but reading is my first love for sure. I have family tree groups and book groups. So when I scrolled down passed “having trouble with 1984” since most of my history searches are focused in the 1880s my eyes read 1884. My first thought was, “Wonder what happened to her family in 1884?” and then, “Did something really big happen in 1884 I am not aware of?”.
Yes. It took me many years to finally get through the whole thing, but I am glad I did. I didn’t love the end, but understanding the cultural references was worth it for me.
I agree. In my opinion the theme of the book is even more relevant today than when it was written. Technology has had a tremendous impact on our lives – instant access to everything vs individual privacy.
I had some struggles reading it. But i enjoyed reading it while listening to the audiobook at the same time. It helped me finish the novel. Great book. Great story.
it one of those famous books that everyone has read and loved it but I find it hard to complete though I have a rule that if i started a book I’ll have to complete it. so I’ve been reading this for 3 years now and have reached on pg 72. keep going or left it….
I read it in high school and loved it, back in the 60s. Life was so stilted then, and it was thrilling to imagine that world. I might see it differently today .
I loved it!!! Very powerful. Will stay with you for your lifetime. It will shape the way you see certain things. Animal Farm will have the same impact. I loved that book too.
I read it in High school before 1984 and I enjoyed it even though it was quite disturbing, but I was into dystopian fiction then, Brave New World and all that. I did listen to it recently and if you can overlook the dated bits it is still pretty good. And it may have taken 30 + years some of it is frighteningly familiar with today, all the cameras that watch our every move, the dumbing down of language (emojis instead of words) for example, to say nothing of people wanting to restrict freedom of speech.
The first 100 pages were slow but then it really takes off and you will need those first 100 pages as you get into the last part of the book. Hang in there because its going to get crazy!
I have to revisit, i blew it off in HS. Tried not long ago, but i am determined to try again. This is not my usual genre, so i guess i have to be in the mood.
it’s very grim. MY advice would be to read Homage to Catalonia, which is brilliant, Orwell’s fascinating account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War.
I don’t remember loving it – I read it in high school years ago, but it was very impacting and is one of those books that is so culturally relevant that it must be read.
Oh yes!
I know this is sacrilege but the movie with John Hurt is just as amazing.
It’s not sacrilegious
It’s brilliant, but if it doesn’t grab you, that’s ok, too.
It’s not an easy read, but well worth it.

I find that whenever I’m struggling with a book, I try to find it in audio form – I figure I’m going to do that a lot with classics
Thanks for all your comments ??

Yes! Keep reading

I listed to the audio version. It was easy enough to keep up with
No 🙁 I did not enjoy it at all
Yes maam!
I liked it, but I would say that it is more important than ever to read it in these days.
Yes. It took me many years to finally get through the whole thing, but I am glad I did. I didn’t love the end, but understanding the cultural references was worth it for me.
Not sure what you mean by better? It’s a dystopian tale, it’s serious stuff that sends a message. It’s not meant to be funny or light.

I got through it though I struggled with it. Definitely didn’t end how I expected.
Required reading in high school. So depressing!☹️
Great book.
Love 1984. Read it in Highschool and more recently, college.
Yes, it ends on a very powerful note.
Contemporary work great book
I liked it as a teenager but I’m reading it again as an adult and I’m finding it slow now. I don’t know why.

An extremely slow start, but it was absolutely worth the read!

I like it but prefer animal farm
Depends on why you are reading it.
Have to be in a certain mood to get through it. The movie is even more depressing.
It gets better.
Yes. Keep it going please.
It’s a good book, with a powerful message.
couldn’t get through it either, left in between

It’s a tough read. I wouldn’t say it gets better, just more involved.
It never gets good, but it must be read.
how i have i felt, just trying. lol

Wanting to read it.

No, trump gets elected!
No. I am not sure if I am in the minority but I did not like that book.
