@Jean started well but the writing and dialogues were really amateurish. It went downhill in the next few books too soapy too aspirational. I checked out after eragon became an elf subtle racism there

Robert

Did you say that was subtle racism? Did you even read the book? The connection with the dragons did that to him. Elves didnt look like that or move that fast nor were they immortal until they connected with the dragons. They are becoming dragonlike. Not elflike.

Calm down brother. Don’t get triggered. I read the book series till the 3rd one otherwise how would i have known about it. There was a line i distinctly remember where eragon was described as the most beautiful man or the most unappealing elf. Why is being an elf aspirational? Why couldn’t a human be great in his own right. Anyway really harmless subtle racism be fairer and prettier. Oh well

@Stephanie it gets boring around the third book. But the first one was really good

Sarah Kenner Thanks for the heads up. I’ve read (and very much enjoyed) the three book included In The Service of The King, but I have yet to read the other three.

There are only a gazillion of em. 🙂
What kind of dragons do you like?
Smart, scheming, dragons?
Mindless killing-machine dragons?
Friendly, helpful dragons?

More the wise magical kind tbh

Well, His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik (which some else recommended above) is pretty close. It’s basically the war against Napolean with dragons and there are dragons on both sides of the war. Not really super magical, but they do fly and have various breath weapons. I enjoyed the series a lot. 🙂

Not a series but it’s a really long book with them and it’s awesome and their place in the world is fantastically done.

Zebron Lemke Brent Weeks, no dragons. Brandon Sanderson no dragons. Patrick Rothfuss, no dragons. Jim Butcher, Robert Jordan, Joe Abercrombie, RA Salvatore, Gene Wolfe, Philip Pullman… no dragons… I’d say 75-80% of the fantasy that I have read doesn’t have any dragons in it.

Legion Awakening by Nicholas Taylor is 3 book series similar to the Eragon series. If you haven’t read the Eragon series it’s a must.

You’d probably like the shannara books by terry brooks (I particularly liked the sword of shannara trilogy) if you like the dragonlance books.

It’s a YA series but I enjoy Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven spin off Dragonwatch to be a fun one.

My first dragon series was The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C Wrede.

The Eye of the Dragon by Stephen King is a fantasy novel about brothers- but not really dragons lol

@Sara read eye of the dragon years ago great book although no dragons in it. Nice intro for walter o dim.

1
Sara

@Scott I was dipping my toe into fantasy after reading too many holocaust/Salem witch trial historical fiction novels. Eye of the Dragon was my first Stephen King. My dad recommended it. I moved onto the Gunslinger series and didn’t get past Wizard and Glass.

ScottQuestion author

@Sara shame that it kinda gets going from book 5. I loved dark tower books grew up with em

0
Sara

@Scott I was too young. 11 or 12. The themes got a little racy for my little heart. When they tried to make the gunslinger into a movie I thought about a re-read. I feel like it will mean so much more as an adult. I just couldn’t wrap my head around some of the plot devices.

I know it does get quite deep in places. Don’t get me started on the joke of a movie though. It could have been so much better….

The Summer Dragon (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26068046-the-summer-dragon?from_search=true) by Todd Lockwood. Very Pern-esque, and actually written by the guy who did the illustrations for the Pern books. I read the whole thing in one day.

Joust (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13993.Joust?from_search=true) by Mercedes Lackey is a really good series too. All about fighting on dragons, raising them, and eventually throwing over the corrupt government.

Also by Mercedes Lackey and Andre Norton is The Elvenbane (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/176892.The_Elvenbane?ac=1&from_search=true) about elves, humans, and shape shifting dragons.

How to train your dragon, but its too childish, so game of thrones I think, I would’ve said the hobbit but it only had one dragon so it doesn’t count ?
