I always find myself picking up the Prydain chronicles or Narnia or Susan Cooper’s Dark is Rising set when I’m wanting some comfort fantasy. I know them well and it’s like having coffee with an old friend when you’ve had a bad day.
I’ve read all of them! I know I’ve still got the Narnia books, I think I still have the Prydain books somewhere…but I don’t have the Dark is Rising anymore ? All great stories though
I have all of them. My Narnia and Dark sets are mismatched and slowly being replaced as I find covers which match the ones I like… But Prydain… My Prydain is a treasure. It’s all 5 books in one tome, with a bonus story about how Little Dallben became the Enchanter Dallben.
The Sword and Sorceress anthology series, started by Marion Zimmer Bradley. A great way to sample top notch fantasy fiction, submissions are being taken for Volume 31, due to come out in 2018.
Helene Wecker’s Golem and the Jinni Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series, Dead Witch Walking first Naomi Novik’s Uprooted and His Majesty’s Dragon Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series Anne Bishop’s The Others, Written in Red. Esther M. Friesner’s Chicks in Chainmail Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows
And that’s what I’d recommend from this year’s reading, thus far.
Try Terry Pratchett, he has a very loose fantasy series (you can read it without much order) of books, there’s something for everyone. My personal favorites are ‘Going Postal’ and ‘Fifth Elephant’. But all of them are incredibly funny – sort of Monty-Pythonesqe humor and almost every page has something that can be quoted, either for silliness’ sale or because it’s so deep.
Also try any Ursula K. LeGuin’s books. They have such amazing and interesting and strong characters, also she doesn’t shy away from developing them and it’s incredibly refreshing.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgensten , anything by Patricia Mckillip like Alphabet of Thorn, and The Golem & the Jinni by Helen Wecker. All of them are written with beautiful language that makes the fantastic seem normal. I second others with their suggestions of Narnia, Wheel of time and A song of Ice and Fire
I think I’m sometimes pushing Raymond E Feist too hard, but that’s because I love his books. I especially love the Empire-trilogy he wrote with Janny Wurts, but over all he’s my favorite fantasy author of all time.
The glass arrow by kriste. sImmons, the falconer by elizabeth may, dragons and harper hall of pern by anne mccaffrey, the inheritance cycle by christopher pailini, tinder by sally gardner (its an illustrated fairy tale retelling what more could you want), caravel by stephanie garber, daughter of smoke and bone by laini taylor
I haven’t read much fantasy lately but my husband realy enjoyed the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski

My favourite is “The Troll’s Grindstone” – action / adventure.

Try Gail Z. Martin. You could start with The Summoner from her Chronicles of the Necromancer series. She also has several other series aswell x
I’m addicted to The Morganville Vampires series by Rachael Caine
Can’t stop reading them ?
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Hated it the first time I tried to read it but i’m really enjoying it this time. Go figure.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lunar Chronicles
Anything by Mercedes Lackey.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgensten , anything by Patricia Mckillip like Alphabet of Thorn, and The Golem & the Jinni by Helen Wecker. Anytime anyone asks about fantasy recommendations, he’s the first author I think of.
I agree with you about the Empire trilogy too, awesome books ?
Never heard of them, but those covers are so pretty.
Seconded so fucking hard they were amazing
I just started A Gathering of Shadows a few minutes ago. I loved the first one. So far so good with number two. ?
