Escape. As a small child my life was chaotic. Constantly changing and not stable. Grandparents and books stabilized my brother and I both. We went to a Montessori school and were both reading before we turned three. I honestly don’t remember not being able to read. In kindergarten we went through dick and Jane. I read the whole book that day then was exasperated by the slow pace of the “class read”. I see my granddaughter now is the same. She’s already trying to read. Knows all her letters and sounds and she’s just three. My little mini.

I love it for having an adventure and connecting with another persons mind and a world they created. Non fiction is great to learn about real lives or to learn something.

Escape mostly, I think. I’ve always been an avid reader but life gets busy and I’ve spent most of my adult life in school having to read academic texts and papers. Now that I can finally read for pleasure, I can’t get enough! My dad passed away recently, so nowadays reading helps take my mind off my heartache. It puts other thoughts in my mind and gives me something to look forward to (as long as it’s a really good book!)

Relaxation, getting lost in the story and when I have finished recommending and passing the book onto my friends if I think they will enjoy it as well. This club has given me so many good recommendations that I downloaded a library app to keep track of them all.

Reaxation, pleasure, escapism and with historical fiction a chance to go back in time – and what would I give to be able to do that and see how they lived then.

Reading is life. I feel sorrow for the illiterate, who cannot read, for all they are missing. I feel frustrated by the aliterate, those who can read but choose not to. Why do they limit their knowledge and experience of the world and its many adventures?

It is who I am. Words are the blueprint to everything and reading can bring comfort, joy, sadness, emotion and empathy. I tell my students everyday, if you are a fluent reader then you can accomplish pretty much anything as you have more understanding and knowledge of a wide range of subjects.
