Frances

@Susan We are all entitled to our individual opinions on books and on tv programmes. I liked Lewis very much .

2
SusanQuestion author

@Frances True. I enjoyed Lewis too.

Lesley

@Susan Never even fancied looking at it. Wasn’t a big Morse fan. Don’t think I ever saw any Lewis. It just doesn’t appeal to me, for some reason.

1
SusanQuestion author

@Lesley I think you might have enjoyed Morse rather more than Hinterland ?

1
Lesley

@Susan That wouldn’t have been hard 😉

I haven’t seen endeavour. Loved Morse and Lewis tho

I find Endeavour a bit hard going I find the plots hard to follow I get on better with Shetland Vera and murders in both paradise and midsummer

@Jeanette there’s a new Shetland series? Oooooo, when?

1
Jennie

@Clay Tonight. I think it’s on ITV at 9 o’clock.

2
Jeanette

@Jennie @Clay It is; set to record and then binge watch later!

2
Jeanette

@Jeanette Sorry, I meant that I’m doing that; not that you have to!

2

I love it, I love all the references to future Morse, got the new series set up to record, not watched it yet though

I love Endeavour and all the others mentioned except Murder in Paradise, Just can’t get into that at all.

2
Reply
Sheila

@Jennie Murder in Paradise is not in the same league for me although it wouldn’t do for all of us to think the same, very boring life that would be.

1
Jan

Murder in Paradise was never meant to be taken as serious crime drama 🙂 The 3 lead actors all coming from the comedy arena… 🙂

0
SusanQuestion author

@Jennie Do you mean Death in Paradise? I quite enjoy it as light entertainment and not especially for the crime aspect

2
Jan

@Susan oops 🙂 but yes, agree. Not its meant to be taken seriously.

1
Jan

If realism was an issue in TV crime Luther would have been pensioned off for his antics B|

1
Jennifer

@Jennie can’t get into Murder in Paradise nor Midsummer Murder but it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same thing .

0
Gretta

I think it’s a case of trying to spin an idea to death/milking it dry. Some of the plots are weak. Colin Dexter wouldn’t have approved.

I was reluctant to watch, at the start, but my husband loved it and encouraged me to give it a try. Am so pleased I did. With very few exceptions, every episode has been excellent, and I have high hopes for the latest series, given the quality of the first episode. Outstanding writing, acting and production.

Sheila

@Janet so pleased your husband loves you.

1
Janet

@Sheila oops, Freudian slip!

1
Paul

Endeavour is unusual because the real protagonist is the inspector. The opening episode was therefore a bit all over the place because of the storyline. He also comes across as a bit of a smart arse.

Sam

I love it. Heard him being interviewed on the radio last week and he has a Liverpudlian accent in ‘real life’! I didn’t watch morse so cant compare the two.

I haven’t bothered watching the previous series, to be honest it didn’t appeal to me. But I’d just finished a book and couldn’t make up my mind which book to start next, nothing worth watching on the box, except perhaps Endeavour might be worth a view…….I thoroughly enjoyed it be honest, far better than I expected!

I agree. Loved Morse, but was worried that Lewis might not work. Pleased to say I was so wrong on that one. What made Lewis work was the Lewis/Hathaway partnership. Laurence Fox was perfect in it. I tried to get into Endeavour but couldn’t. Not sure why, possibly being set in a different era? Couldn’t replace John Thaw? Anyway, it just wasn’t for me so I know exactly what you mean.

I love it, also Morse & Lewis, they’re eras in TVP that I can relate to. That said, my husband & I do enjoy picking up on the inaccuracies……for instance, in Sunday’s episode of Endeavour he was driving around in an Irish registered panda car?

You’ve got to feel for Lewis. He’s a good solid copper – but he was bagman to an academic and then, when he gets into the driving seat, his bagman is a Morse in waiting 🙂

@Jan not what I was thinking of but there has been an interesting perspective of a talented WPC and the barriers she faces. I was thinking more of the guns. That episode of the shootout shook me cause I don’t remember there ever being guns around

0
Jan

There were guns – more than now I suspect since the firearms regulations.
I don’t think there were any WPCs at all in the recent episode.

Not as big a fan of Endeavour as Morse & Lewis, but I do like the Inspector Thursday character. I have just read the Faith Martin series of books set in 1960’s Oxford featuring WPC Loveday, they were a really good read.

Can’t say I blame you. ‘Plodding’ is too good for the first episode. Could have cracked that tale out in an hour, easy.

I think it is excellent and worthy of the Morse mantle. The moment at the end of the pilot episode when a young uncertain Morse looked into the rear view mirror and saw John Thaw look back at him was incredible.

I’m a big Morse and Lewis fan….and come from Oxford!! It did take me a little while to get into Endeavour….but now I love it. It explains how Morse’s character develops through time and weaves in the relationships he makes along the way. It shows how he is shaped.
Also a great snap shot in history, culture and values.
