I tried reading The Nightengale three times. I couldn’t get into it. Anyone else? It got great reviews.

The audio helped me. I really enjoyed this but there was something repetitive in the language that kept bugging me.

It takes some time to get into but is worth it. I found the first chapters a bit boring — until I finished the book. Then, the first chapters came alive to me and I reread the beginning.

I didn’t enjoy it. I read it for my book club otherwise we would have broke up long before the ending. And generally I love historical fiction. I was disappointed I didn’t like it.

I HATED it. Hate read it. Full of cliches and predictability and bad writing (the code name was the translation of the last name?$ as well as anachronisms (hummingbirds in France! Iceboxes!) I’ll never read this author again.

@Gwen I’m so happy you feel the same! My best friend and her mother loved it. I was so confused why…

2

@Jamie if the one woman remembered backing into her husbands arms she did it 10 times. Constantly TOLD about Isabelle’s beauty never shown it. Just bad writing.

So, I read a ton of WWII fiction – def. my fave genre. So without reading the summary of the book, I bought it. And based on the title I (stupidly) assumed that one of the sisters became a nurse…florence nightengale, the nightengale…its where my mind went. So, for the first half of the book I couldn’t figure out when the nursing was going to happen….I enjoyed it, but I liked her other book set in this time (Winter Garden) so much more. And there are many, many books in this genre I would rank above it on my faves list.

Yes, I get that. But in my mind I made the leap to Florence Nightengale and then nursing.

I loved it, thought it was one of the best I read that year. But there are books that everyone seemed to think was great and I didn’t like at all. Reading tastes are very individual, just as those who prefer one painting over another. The one thing that binds us together is not the books we like, but our love of reading.

I ended up liking it, but I did not care very much for the writing. I would move on, if I were you. I’ve had the experience where everyone else loved a book (Wild by Cheryl Strayed comes to mind) and I just couldn’t get into it.

Personally I think it would be very odd for everyone to like the same books and not sure why it matters. I could care less if someone dislikes a book I love or vice versa and honestly have never felt the need to let others know. IMO.
