At that age I was reading Dune by Frank Herbert. Also good would be His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik…The Warrior’s Apprentice (Vorkosigan Saga) by Lois McMaster Bujold…Phule’s Company by Robert Lynn Aspirin …The Belgariad by David Eddings…

Many boys enjoy non fiction. I suggest some non fiction books like Over Time: My Life As a Sportswriter by Frank Deford…Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall…Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation by John Carlin…The Swamp Fox: How Francis Marion Saved the American Revolution by John Oller…Crazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors by Stephen Ambrose…The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe …

Also a good age for mysteries. I remember reading Agatha Christie at that age. Some other mysteries that might be good are Billy Boyle by James R Benn [first in the series about WWII and its lesser known events]…Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters…

They’re about teenagers who are descended from Gods (Greek in the Percy Jackson series, Roman in the Jason/Piper/Leo books, Egyptian in the kane Chronicles, Norse in the Magnus chase books) so they have cool powers and go on adventures

GREAT books indeed! My 12 y/o daughter can’t get enough of them!

Fantasy/Sci-Fi. I highly suggest Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. Also, the Illuminae trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. As well as The Martian by Andy Weir and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas is also really good.

Fablehaven series, Eragon series, the secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flemel series are the first three series my 13 yr suggested. All are fantasy.

Loved Eragon, shame they didn’t make a good enough film to continue the series…

Try Rick Riordan or Christopher Paolini. Riordan is the author of the Percy Jackson series and another one set in Egypt, The Kane Chronicles. Paolini wrote a series called Inheritance Cycle. The Brotherband series caught my son’s attention for awhile (not fantasy, but very good).

The Gone series is great by Michael Grant, as is Patrick Ness Chaos Walking Trilogy. Both are about broken down society, and the main characters are male teenagers, and they have loads going on in them!
