Everything and I do mean EVERYTHING by Tolkien. And also (from my own backyard) The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski (the books that the games are based on)

The Witcher-series is great! While I love Tolkien, I did see a thread here where someone recommended reading Silmarillion to someone who hadn’t read any of his books, which I think is the best way to kill all interest in Tolkien. So a word of advice read the LOTR-trilogy and The Hobbit first and if you’re still intrested then read EVERYTHING 🙂

Mystic cove by Tricia O’Malley. Dark witch, shadow spell and blood magick by Nora Roberts. Discovery of witches trilogy

I read LOTR and The Hobbit practically in one sitting when I was a teenager. And then gave up while trying to comprehend Silmarillion.

I have read the Lord of the Rings books years ago when I was trying to find an genre my husband would like so I could turn him on to books.

I’ve been wanting to read it but I’ve seen several people saying that it’s really bad :/

I still want to read it though

I liked them. There were aspects I didn’t like but overall I like them

The show is actually pretty good too!

Barring these, definitely get some Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

I cannot reccomend Neil Gaiman highly enough (think Stardust, Neverwhere, Ocean at the End of the Lane and American Gods). Also the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. You could try the Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks (not my favorite, but each to their own). Also the Mistborn series by Brendan Sanderson. The Wheel of Time series is worthwhile too.

I read ‘Ocean at the end of the lane’ and was really disappointed. I have Stardust and American Gods though so am hoping I get on with them better.

Should we warn about the series not been finished yet? 🙂

2
IvyQuestion author

I am reading a mystery series that was suppose to be a trilogy and is now 45 books long and she has another one coming out in september. A series not being finished doesn’t bother me, just means I have to catch up so I can be with the rest of the readers when the new one comes out.

1
David

@Ivy The warning is because the two books are really addictive and do not complete a story at all, making you want the next one a lot more than most series.

@Ivy is the mystery series In Death by J.D Robb ???

It’s almost mean and sadistic that I am suggesting these two but they are by far two of my most favorite fantasy books ever…… Unfortunately, they are one book away from being finished with no definitive publishing date ??
Patrick Rothfuss: The Kingkiller Chronicle
Brandon Sanderson: The Stormlight Archive
Even though the series is not finished, they are both completely worth the read.!

The mistborn series is a good read too.

I see you’ve been inundated, Ivy. However, I have to throw my two cents’ worth in, because I don’t see that anyone has mentioned Patricia McKillip. Her works don’t seem to circulate much now, but she is a prize-winning fantasy author who turned out so many great novels that I don’t know which one in particular to recommend. Pick a book, any book!

I went to my local new/used book store yesterday and picked up The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks, Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, and Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb. I was also able to put several of the books that were recommended on my library wish list for when they come available as ebooks to put on my kindle. Now I just have to finish the book I am reading so I can start one of these.
