Nothing’s wrong with you. Different books speak to different people. I’ll bet you some of your favorite books haven’t been well received by others. It’s ok. Read something else. Come back to it later if you feel like it. ❤️
Just coming here to say this! I think the difference might be that with The Nightingale, she was writing a historical novel, trying to get things right, etc. In the afterward of The Great Alone, Kristin Hannah talks about how she lived in Alaska as a child so I think that novel was much closer to her heart and the writing reflected that.
I have been sitting on this book for the past four months, only reading a few pages here and there. Today I picked it up and have read for about 2hrs and I’m now hooked! It takes a while to get into it.
I believe sometimes it’s just when you are reading it and what’s going on in your life at the time. Start something different and then one day go back to it.
I had the same problem. I actually gave it longer than I do most books I’m not into because my friends read it and I had to try. It was a good book—a little long for me.
It’s not my favorite. It was too long, and too depressing. However, I loved Winter Garden. I didn’t finish The Great Alone; well, halfway through I skipped to the last couple chapters. First time ever. I don’t feel like I missed anything.
If your public library has Overdrive audiobooks, you may want to try the audio version. The narration is outstanding on this one. I listened to the beginning and got hooked. I read some and listened to the rest. The audiobook was my favorite book of 2018.
Loved it
Maybe just not your fit
Maybe knowing it is based or inspired by a true story will help?
@Renee Maybe! I had no idea! Thanks!
Andree De Jongh’s story. Sometimes it helps me to know the backstory or to understand what inspired the author.

@Renee thank you so much!
You are so welcome! I hope it helps. It is a wonderful story to fall in love with. I hope you can! 🙂
It was kind of difficult at first, the last couple pages/ending were all worth the muddle through…..for me
Some books are just not some people’s cup of tea.
It took me about 50 pages to get into it, then I couldn’t stop from there.

Nothing at all I couldn’t get into it either
Nothing. I didn’t like it either.
I couldn’t either… Returned it to the library without reading it. I may try again next year.
I read it, didn’t think it was that great. I did however love The Great Alone (I know it’s totally different).

It might get better as you continue. Keep going! If you feel like it’s not working then maybe it is not for you.

Maybe you’re not ready for an old age home yet ???????

I loved it!
One of my favourite books of 2018 although it took me a couple of attempts to get into it too
It is a slow start but it does pick up. It is one of my favorites!
