My daughter-in-law was here yesterday and I chatted with her about the stack of ten or so “that I have decided I really want to read next:” As of January, I purged four full boxes of books and donated them to Planned Parenthood for their annual booksale. Those were ones I read or didn’t really ever want to read. That left about 80 (beyond the ones “I really want to read next) on the bookself that I WILL read someday?

I do, however, have a small collection of ever-changing books that I plan to read on my shelves along with certain favorites, a few specialty and reference books. I do need to get rid of some of my college text books. That is going to be difficult. Parting is such sweet sorrow – they’re such fun to browse every so often.

No you are not alone. Since I recently bought them and have read three other books, I have not had time yet. LOL.

These recommendations are great! I’ve read two books this week without that feeling “have to finish it before book group meets”. That’s when I know it’s a good book. Reading w:o looking at the clock or wondering whats on TV

Always reading my way through them. Oh, a Goodwill opened near me. I never leave there without books. Once novels are read, I donate them to make room for more books.

I remember reading someone saying that having a library of unread books reflects your continous effort for knowledge. A library should serve as a visual reminder of what you don’t know. Keep collecting those books. 🙂

Of course. I can’t pass a Friends of the Library book sale without browsing and coming away with more books. That’s why this year I’m exclusively reading books I already own or can access electronically (such as at Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg for e-books and LibriVox for audiobooks, because I like having e-books for reading in bed at night and audiobooks to listen to). The only exception to this rule will be to fill a reading challenge prompt for a book published this year. But that will be something I get from the library so as not to add more books to my already overflowing shelves.

1

True, true….

0
Michael

@Chris….I threw out hundreds of cassettes and VHS tapes when I moved from Minneapolis to NYC….boy, did I have a bad feeling as I tossed them down the garbage chute….

0
Chris

Ouch, that had to hurt. I purchased a converter to hopefully figure out how to put my tapes and vinyl on my computer. I’m down to just a few dozen VHS, replaced nearly all of them with DVDs.

0
Michael

#MeToo….that stung a little….Thank God I never threw out my vinyl….

1
Chris

Oh yeah, I listen on my turntable all the time. Somewhere between 2 and 3 hundred albums, and still buy more occasionally, hard to find good ones I want.

0
Michael

I live next to Brooklyn….Endless Possibilities….

0
Michael

I’m also addicted to Jack White and White Stripes….I’m a Third Man Records Vault Member….so, I get a Jackie Whiteish Vinyl Box Set every three months in the mail….

0
Chris

Once in a while, I’ll run out to Rhino Records, otherwise I try to find them in nature. Yard sales, thrift shops. Can’t afford those classic prices.

0
Chris

Have to balance it with my thriftbook account, and comic orders. ?

1

There’s a great used record shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn….

My Bookoutlet hauls are getting really hard to hide from my husband, lol. They never cooperate with delivery dates that coincide with my days off work ??‍♀️ he actually pulled several books off the shelf and asked me if I’d read them before thinking of buying new ones. I think I blank stared at him so long he gave up waiting for an answer. He shook his head and sat down but then gave me the oddest look when I pulled the books out he removed and put them back in the right order. Then it was his turn to blank stare at me ??‍♀️

1

@Ann….That 1-Click ordering system at Amazon will be the death of me….

3
Ann

@Michael Exactly!

0
Judith

@Ann I just ordered 3 more books and I have no idea where I’ll put them.

2
Ann

@Judith Same here! I need a new shelving system!

1
Judith

@Ann I always seem to manage to move around the books enough to fit one or two more in. It’s like a huge jigsaw puzzle.

2
Ann

@Judith Exactly what I have on the agenda today. Also, I donate books to my local library from time to time. That gives me a little extra room.

2
Judith

@Ann I do the same but I appear to bring in more books than go out. Last time I tried to cull books I thought I would never get around to reading, I managed to remove 1 single book. I guess that’s something, not a lot but something! ?

1
Ann

@Judith LOL! I can relate!

Yes, I sell many back to the bookstore (Powells), then get in store credit to buy more. Its a vicious circle! Or is it viscous? :-p

3

@Paul ! Powell’s? Portland? I had the best vacation there in 2008.

I’m in Brookline, MA. Our independent bookstore is The Booksmith. A treasure. I’ll bring my books there, then donate the remainders to our library.

1
Anne

Every time I am in Portland I make sure to carve out an extra day so I can wander in Powell’s (it is where I discovered Wendell Berry), have a coffee and take a deep breath among all those lovely printed pages!

I keep coming up with “clever” ideas 2 solve this problem. I limited my TBR 2 100! Lol- I made a list of the books I have not read in my collection- promising myself I would read them b4 I brought in a new book. And then – treasures book store had the complete unabridged work of Dickens! All in a lovely red leather cover with beautiful hold lettering!!!!!! It was truly more than I could bear. But – my TBR is now down to 97!

My mother recently was going to “throw away” all of her books.
I “rescued” them.
Many are not my cup of tea.
I will eventually sort through and figure out which ones I want to read, which ones I want to repurpose, and which ones I will just keep because I should have them on my bookshelf.

Stop spending good cash money on books, you can borrow nearly anything from http://archive.org/…simply download a copy to Kindle or Bookperk….you must borrow the book to access pdf files, return the book and you retain a permanent copy….
