Great mix of history, romance, sex, adventure. Its a big 8 book commitment! You will for sure want to keep going most likely. The characters are unforgettable and you just get swept up in the the story.

I’m a lover. Though I will admit there are bits that I find a little hard to get through, but its worth it. The earlier books are the best. Warning! She plants so mighty frustrating cliff hangers in some of those books. I don’t remember which one, but was almost thrown across the room shortly after I finished the last page.

I couldn’t make it through the first book. It just never really hooked me for some reason. The show had a similar issue for me — I felt like it couldn’t quite decide what it was trying to be and the tone was all over the place. But I know this is a bit of a fringe opinion.

I don’t read back to back. Honestly I read one a year. I started reading when the show first came out and I read the next book in the series right before the new season starts. I would probably burn out if I did back to back.

Started this in the early 1990s. Absolutely LOVED the first book, the 2nd was a tad boring (too much Paris!!!) LOVED the 3rd book, quite enjoyed the 4th and gave up halfway through the 5th – . Too ‘wordy’ and a tad boring for me.

I read the first four books, started the fifth and completely lost interest. Of course that was back when there were only five books. Anyway, for some, the series is a godsend. For me, not so much.

2

Exactly the same as me, I found the 5th book incredibly boring – just too long and wordy and I gave up.

Best series ever written in the history of the world– EVER

3

Neva

Wendi, there are several others that equal Outlander, but they do not surpass it.

0
Jason

Really?

0
Neva

@Jason yes. Why do you ask?

0
Wendi

@Jason absolutely. I actually went to hear the author. Diana Gabaldon speak with a couple of my friends in Kansas City. It normally takes her 6-8 years to write one book. They are so technically accurate and her characters are honestly a part of my life. Love her. Not your think tho bro- it would appeal to more of a female audience- too much love and sex for you 😀

I just had to stop reading it after 300 pages. It was more like a romance novel, which I don’t like, than a historical fiction. I don’t feel a good book needs a sex scene every few pages to make it better. I really wanted to like this book. I’m more of a Ken Follett fan for historical fiction.

1
Reply
Neva

Ken Follet has sex scenes in his books. I remember a particularly vivid one in The Eye of the Needle.

0
Kymm

But it’s not explicit nor every other page.

0
Neva

@Kymm oh yes it was explicit, and Outlander does not have sex on “every other page.”

1
Kymm

I guess it’s a personal preference. I just didn’t like the book.
