Hey y’all. I’ve got an 8 year old kid who likes to read and has requested books similar to Harry Potter and Diary of A Wimpy Kid. Any suggestions? :)

The magisterium series is really similar to HP and I really enjoyed those books! Also I would definitely recommend the Spiderwick Chronicles and the Land of Stories series!

It was after these books that my sons and daughter fell in love with Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. The four enjoyed The Chronicles Of Narnia, Inkheart, and The Mysterious Benedict Society. They also began branching out to middle grade classics at this point as well. Everything from The Secret Garden to Manaic Magee. Then came the nonfiction. Lol I think it’s true; Harry Potter is the gateway book!

Percy Jackson is a good one, especially if they like long series. I also really liked A Series of Unfortunate Events when I was in Primary school. I also read the Inkheart series, (Inkheart, Ink spell, Ink death) but didn’t get to finish it (I lost my book). It was very good as far as I read, which was the first two books.

The How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell. Extremely funny. And I love the focus on friendship and how anyone can prove to be a hero. The wimpy kid, or the bully.

She has given the characters some hilarious names like Big Boobied Bertha, Snotface Snotlout, Fishlegs.

Very different from the movies. A main example being that Toothless is a wimpy dragon in the books. A really silly and very funny dragon. But both the movies and books are brilliant.
