Hey all! I got dumped last night?. I need an “escape” book recommendation. Anything that will let me live in another world for a bit. Female main character is a plus. I love the fae, witches, and magic in general. No werewolves preferably. A romantic aspect maybe. Thank you!

My romance is free on all stores. The Change by Angela White. In it, women rule the world and men have been enslaved. If you like it, I’ll gift you part 2, Changeling Winds. And sorry for your pain! breakups suck.

A Court of Thrones and Roses series sounds like it has everything you are looking for. Lots of people are obsessed with it. I thought Night Circus was amazing. Good female character, a little romance, and lots and lots of world building.

Sorry you got dumped….. you’re an attractive lady. I know that it feels like a big waste and feelings are probably hurt but pretty girls don’t say single unless they want to be. Just make sure the guy is worth your time. As far as a book…… I suggest something more aggressive and gritty. And some humor. It’s not what you described but it’s a fun read……..The First Law series. The first book is called The blade itself.

@John I am almost done with the last book in that series! I love it! Wish there were more female characters but the ones they do have are excellently written. Ferro is my absolute favorite. I hope there is a film or TV series soon. These books are some of my favorite ever.

John

Some of my favorites also. I absolutely love the humor. I love how you end up liking the bad guys as much as the good ones.

@Rebecca Best Served Cold has a main character heroine. I think it’s also his best book.

My book the Skeleton Stone.

Quick read. Fun little adventure. Nothing epic to bog down.

No female lead but the third book in the stand alone series will have one

Each book is essentially standalone

The Dreamblood Duology and The Inheritance Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin are definitely escape books. The world building is amazing. There’s tons of magic and magical creatures or beings in both.

The Inheritance Trilogy has gods and godlings and then people who also have magic and even demons. The women main characters are badass and the romance aspects are so well done, very differently done than most books I’ve ever read.

The Dreamblood Duology is all dream and healing magic and more and set in a desert world which I found so beautiful to escape into. This Duology is pretty dark in some aspects, but also funny and inspiring. The first book centers around a character that’s a man and the second centers around a woman breaking down all kinds of barriers.

Can’t recommend them both enough!

Mistborn (Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages) by Brandon Sanderson. Vin is a strong female lead, light on romance, but it’s there. He gets some negative reviews for being a bit long-winded, but he can build a world with unique magic faster and more thoroughly than anyone else I’ve read.

I’ve read all of George RR Martin so I can handle long winded and still very much enjoy.

it’s wonderful! And normally I feel a bit old for YA, but it’s absolutely incredibly well written, no love triangles, and the female characters especially shine. I hope there is a film one day.

THRONE OF GLASS!!!! if you haven’t read it then you absolutely need to. It’s got Fae, magic, witches, a female main char, no werewolves, and a good bit of romance. There are 7 books in the main arc (the last one came out last week!) and a prequel novella! Idk if anyone else recommended these yet or if you’ve read them but oh my god they’re so good. Author is Sarah J. Maas! Her other series is great too ?

I would reccomend The Grisha-series by Leigh Bardugo. It’s YA-fantasy but i really enjoyed it. It has romance, an interesting magic-system and a female lead. She starts of very plain, weak and insecure but develops a lot over the 3 books

Sorry, I would have preferred to recommend a book, but this scene is all I could think of.

But now that it is out the way, I always highly recommend anything by Brandon Sanderson; he is my current favorite author. Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series is always a good read. Especially if you are feeling bummed out. It’s quick and easy to read and also lighthearted and very entertaining. Go with his witches Discworld line of stories. Or there is always Anne McCaffrey, she has a lot of books with solid female main characters and her books are also quick easy reads.
