Saaaaaame! I’ve been picking up books and half finishing them. Nothing has really held my interest lately. Very frustrating. Hoping this goes away for all of us!

Yes it happened several times. I have also found that reading is crippling my neck. I have turned to audiobooks from the library, scribd, and occasionally audible. It has been a fantastic solution for me and cured my insomnia.

I’m in a slump right now. Went to my TBR bookcase, and couldn’t make a decision. Too many choices. So I’m reading back issues of The New Yorker.

I used to read a couple of books a week. In 2015 I had surgery and quit reading. It has only been the past few months that my interest has been renewed. I bought a new e-reader because I get too distracted by alerts on my iPad. I still have to consciously work at it and schedule time to read but it’s getting better.

Yes!!! I’ve been in one for almost 3 weeks and I don’t know why!

I was for a year and a half ? I had just lost my father. One day while admiring the books Costco, which I did every week, I touched a book that felt different… I bought it, read it and felt alive again. It will come back. Don’t stop touching the books

Try magazines and short stories for a bit.

I turn to podcasts at times when my attention span won’t focus on a book. The Moth (personal, true stories) is one of my all-time favorites. I listen to it on public radio, too (another alternative).

Sara

Yes, I go through phases where I’m just not focused on reading and sticking with a novel. But it comes back and I have a good list to get through!!

2

Me too! I’ve been really busy with work this fall (I’m a kindergarten teacher) and just cannot focus! I have this huge TBR pile on my nightstand too?

Currently ?‍♀️. I started a new (emotionally draining) job and just haven’t had the energy.

Yes, definitely, but it never lasts… a book will come along that will reignite the passion. I hope that happens for you soon… ?

Yes. Sometimes after finishing a book/series that really clicks for me. For me, at least, that kind of drought can be solved by rereading an old favorite.

The worst was the drought I had during a family crisis. That time I just rode it out. I didn’t even have enough ability to concentrate on simple books I already knew. That one was tough.

Once. When I was pregnant with my twins. Could not concentrate. It was terribly boring without reading or watching TV. Hardest 7 months of my life. Then I was too tired and sleepy when they were newborn. But after a few months I started reading again like crazy after their bedtime. They are avid readers now, too.

I went through a really long period like that after I broke my leg. For a few years.

1

Amy

Yes, but thankfully it doesn’t last long for me. To help, I re-read something light (and usually hilarious) like Jen’s books or Waiter Rant. Once my “brain re-sets” I’m good to go! Good luck to you!!

I had been a voracious reader since the first time I remember my mother reading to me when I was 3. So when I suddenly lost interest in 2014, it was like I’d lost an organ or arm or leg. I felt wobbly; however, try as I might, it was like I had lost my taste for reading and nothing, not even short articles appealed to me. Once I leaned into, as in accepted my disinterest I had less stress & frustration. It took about 2 years; however, I slowly started reading again…started out with Audiobooks…and now I’m back to being voracious!

All the time. It’s worst when I have a million great options and end up sending them all back to the library unopened.

1

Beth

I’ve got books going to thrift stores/charity shops unread. I end up buying them back again !

1

Kristin

Try a magazine? Sometimes after I finish a book (esp if I’m on a book hangover ?) a few days with a magazine with short articles, and lots of pictures and fluff is just what I need!

3
Reply
Susan

I have a couple of books I reread when that happens to me. For some reason that jump starts me and I’m fine again.

I go through periods where I slow down. Often I read so quickly that I find keeping that pace is hard. I think it’s natural to have varying interest even in things we love.

Maybe it’s the time of year? We’re all occupied with holiday and family plans, I wonder if that’s what’s throwing off our reading game.

My reading productivity drops 90% once summer’s over. I blow through a book/day in the sun and now it takes me two weeks.

Yes. This has happened to me a few times. Don’t worry – it will come back. One thing that helps me is reading junk – like some book that is not my norm (fiction) and it helps. Sometimes I force myself to read for a certain amount of time. 10-30 mins it depends. The crazy rich Asians trilogy got me going with reading. Espc fiction. I went on to ‘when life gives you lululemons’ and now ‘the hate u give’ maybe you just need fluff. Or a book about another hobby you might have – art or something. Or maybe just take a break.

Yes. I’m writing research for grad school. I don’t want to read anything right now. I’m hoping the feeling passes quickly, but i’m doing audiobooks until it does.
