Have any of you read the entire Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austin? Curious. I’m enjoying it but it’s kind of a struggle. How times have changed!

The old time and mixed writing styles of the 18th century romantic novel!

I hear you. Love Austen’s style. Witty, romantic, insightful. I’m re-reading “Mansfield Park” right now. Re-read “Northanger Abbey” last week.

I absolutely adored Pride & Prejudice, but I enjoy satire, sass, and social commentary.

And reading this, I hope I don’t come across as like, elitist or snobby or something because I swear I’m not. Read what you enjoy, by all means! I’m just a particularly big fan of these things, which gives Austen a certain appeal for me, lol.

@Caity I’m enjoying it as well! The writing style is a bit hard to follow at times, but it’s great!

I’ve read it. I enjoyed it a lot. However, since reading a lot of contemporary, paranormal and similar works in the indie author community, I haven’t touched a lot of the classics.

I tried reading it several times, but have found it so hard because of how much I fell in love with the 2005 movie.. and attempted to read the book after watching the movie. I found some differences.. mainly in Mr. Darcey’s character, and that bothered me lol so I just gave up on it!

I’ve read it, but it was a bit of a struggle for me as well. Didn’t really enjoy it, but then again I’m not a fan of romances.

The language is more difficult based on the time period. The syntax is more complex.

Yes! All time favorite! But I first read it in middle school and for some reason I had a much easier time with old time language then. I tried to reread a Shirley Jackson story and I had a difficult time following the language. Funny how our brains change. I don’t know if I could have gotten into pride and prejudice now without previously reading it

There is an annotated version that you might like. It has a page of text with the opposite page explaining things from that page. The notes themselves are an interesting read.

Had to read it in High School and it was a struggle. I think you eventually get used to the language. I did love the BBC production with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, very easy to watch, especially Mr Darcy ?

It was one of the topics I picked for my oral finals at Uni (Jane Austen and her novels“), so yes, I‘ve read them all. Once you get used to the language, it‘s nice!
There‘s a „sequel“ By P.D. James I enjoyed quite a lot: „Death Comes to Pemberly“. You can treat yourself to this one once you‘ve finished!
Plus there‘s another modern novel which focuses on the life of the staff in the house of the Bennett family around the time of the events in P&P: „Longbourn“ by Jo Baker. I liked that one a lot.

It’s one of my favourite books. It can take a while to get into a rhythm with books written before the 20th century though. I think it took me two or three chapters to find my rhythm.

Interesting bit of trivia – Jane Austen’s books were often ‘prescribed’ as therapeutic reading for soldiers suffering from shellshock/PTSD during WWI, something about them being ‘homely’, I believe. They were apparently very popular in the trenches!
