Definitely worth it. It’s grim at points, but a really well constructed plot with very interesting characters

I did read all three back to back some years ago now, and to be honest I was fed up during the third one, great reads, but perhaps space them out.

You have to persevere, the first couple of chapters are hardwork then you won’t be able to put them down, promise!!!

I don’t like the first chapters to be hard work. I read to relax, not to work, certainly not since A Level Lit days 🙂

They are brilliant. I read the first two and then couldn’t get a copy of the third, this was when they were really popular. I was desperate! Luckily I managed to borrow a copy.

The two by the other author are quite ordinary in comparison.

0
David

@Bonnie I thought they were just as good.

0
Bonnie

@David Thats great. I have been trying to read ‘The Girl Who takes an Eye for an Eye, Swedish (original) version and I am struggling. So much so, I have put it down for now and reading other books.

0

@Bonnie I certainly don’t think they’re ordinary. They’re very different from what I’m used to reading

What about Henning Mankell?

0
Budway

He was first published with his Wallender series, first translated in 1997 i think but i think Steig Larsons 2011 novel followed by the film created a buzz that really began Nordic Nore,i.e. J0 Nesbo, Jussi-Adler Olsen,Karen Fossum and et all.But hey she asked for an opinion not a contest.

1
Lesley

@Budway I was just wondering as I knew Mankell long before I’d heard of Larssen so I was interested.

And of course there are now 2 additional books written by David Lagercrantz continuing the journey – with the authority of whoever it is has the rights to Larsson’s books, over which there has been some difficulty as between his long time partner and his family.

I found them boring, repetitive & in serious need of editing. Had the man not died prior to publication, I suspect he’d have reduced the trilogy to a single volume. He should have, anyway.

Lesley

It makes for a much more interesting thread when someone has a strong opposing opinion to all the ‘it’s a great book’! I just found it way too heavy going to entice me to carry on.

0
Carmen

@Lesley That was my oopinion, too. I struggled througgh them because I’d been lent the set, & I hoped it would get better, but then, apart from Pippi Longstocking, I’m not a fan of the Nordic genres anyway. I’ve too much to do to spend Hygge evenings falling asleep over some of the offerings available. I’d much prefer snuggling under one of my hand made quilts, stitching another, & listening to a good talking book while sipping hot chocolate with home made damson vodka AND THEN falling asleep.

If you don’t like back-story and detail and meanders – you might not like these. But if you like strong women and the scandinavian outlook on life – then maybe they will appeal

The first 100 pages of the 1st book could have been edited to 20 pages. After you get through that, it was good. Just good. I preferred the 2cnd book, didn’t drag on. Didn’t complete the 3rd. If you have them, give it a go.

1
Reply
Lesley

I certainly didn’t survive the first 100. Nothing like. It lost me very early on. I just resent having to work that hard when there are other books which draw you deftly in from the beginning.
