I read it in school and hated it. Tried again a few years ago & still didn’t like it. I ended up just skimming it.

It’s a story within a story, I enjoyed the middle but not the rest. If you want it explained for school then try Thugnotes on YouTube. A rapper explains many classic novels and is brilliant. But be aware he does swear a bit!

I have never read it but you might be having a hard time getting into it because the time period it takes place during. Would they let you listen to it on audio book instead?

It’s horrible. It’s one of the absolute worst I have ever had to read. I too had to read it for school. I had my mom read it to me. It is that bad. And even she said she hates it. Good luck and I’m sorry you have to read that horrible book.

Try and watch a film version of it to help you put faces, voices and scenes in your mind whilst reading. Meanwhile, why oh why can’t schools try harder to instil a love of reading in their pupils instead of a dread at having to write yet another essay on an arduous book?

movies are nothing like the book…

1

I agree, but if you’re struggling with a text it can help bring it to life.

My daughter bought it for her uni course and I borrowed it. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed it and how little any film adaptation even resembled it. Great book especially considering she was only a teenager when she wrote it. Everyone has their own taste though so if it’s not for you move on!

Shouldn’t probably be saying this but if you look the book up on BBC Bitesize it will tell you everything you need to know for school. ?

It’s a very intellectual book. Mary Shelley was from a family of intellectuals, and her vocabulary, for one so young, definitely shows that. You have to keep in mind too the time during which this book was written. It takes more discipline to read such a classic.

Science Friday picked this book for their book club last spring. Listening to those podcasts added a new dimension to it for me.

I read it whilst listening to the Eurythmics album with “No more I love you” on it. Very atmospheric. The book is better than any film of it and the themes of human connection, loneliness and rejection are wonderful. Makes me want to dig out my copy and read it again! Back to back with Dracula ?‍♂️

I read It back to back with Dracula too! Hated Frankenstein, loved Dracula

When you think of it as either the story of a father who abandoned his son or a scientist who abandoned his experiment and look at how the monster tries to fit into society, you may start feeling something for the poor monster.
There are so many layers to this book.
Getting through books like this will help you in so many ways….critical and analytical thinking being the most important. And if you go on Jeopardy, you could win. Stick with it. It is short. Do not read the Cliff Notes.

Read it decades ago. Studied it, read it again, wrote papers on it at uni, completely fell in love with it. I think knowing a bit about the context in which it was written helps.

I read it a few years ago when I was having an ‘I need to read the classics phase. I got through it, but I didn’t like it. Wasn’t she under the influence of some narcotic when she wrote this, or was that someone else

Can people say why they loved it and what was it about the book they liked? How did they enjoy it? This might make it easier for others to find a way in?

I had trouble with it in high school, then reread it after seeing it in umpteen movies. Maybe see some of the films & read some of the reviews & analyses. Do the reading yourself, though, then glean from others. Don’t plagiarize.

I loved the commentary on “outsiders”. I had to suspend belief for a a bit of it but overall I found it to be very different to any Frankenstein movie I’d seen, an eye-opener.

I have my classes read the chapter summaries on spark notes first before we read anything difficult in class. Then they understand it as they read it. It makes a huge difference in comprehension.

Look at it as a story of a child who only wanted to be loved, and got rejected and abused because of his appearance. It is actually a very sad, heart wrenching story. I love it and cry every time I reread it. I hope it will find its way to your heart.

I am not sure if it is a good read for school… But if you read it when you are ready and then just for yourself and not class, it is quite good. I had a same experience when reading Moby Dick. At school meh… All this analyzing… But as I re-read it a few years later it was a whole new book with a lot of things I noticed for myself. However, for this genre I would still recommend Dracula more than Frankenstein.. ?
