Has anyone here read “The Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follet? I am about a quarter of the way through it so far.

One of my favourite books of all time. It is part of a trilogy and I have read the second one. The third one is on my wish list!

Yes, I hate it with a passion!

Mark

@Martine Why? I was thinking of starting it.

1
Martine

@Mark, poorly written, flat cartoonish characters, longwinded, terrible dialogue. There’s truly nothing good I can say about this book and for the life of me I do not understand why so many people rave about it.

0
Mark

@Martine Yikes, thx.

1
Beth

That is 1 person’s opinion. If I listened to every person who hated a book I’d be reading nothing.

1
Mark

@Beth Yeah, it’s all about what one looks for in literature. One will see trash while another sees Tolstoy.

@Mark in the Great America Reads poll of best American books the book series placed 23rd. It was ahead of The Stand, Alice in Wonderland, Great Expectations and the Catcher in the Rye. I read the first two in series and thought they were wonderful. You have to be committed but if you like it from the start it will be enjoyable.

1
Martine

@Beth, of course, I totally agree. I don’t say it shouldn’t be read. I only say I loathed it. That’s a valid opinion too ?

I have read all three. Brilliant. The tv series was also very good.

Didn’t think I would like it since it’s not what I would ordinarily read. But my husband got it in audio to listen to on a long road trip. We really enjoyed it and were anxious to finish it when home. It’s length gives you lots of time to get to know characters so they do stick with you.

I have to admit, though. The book is so descriptive of the structure of churches that I don’t know what he’s talking about, and it does make it a bit difficult to imagine what the churches look like. It also makes it hard for me to imagine where the characters are going in situations.
