Has anyone here read “The Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follet? I am about a quarter of the way through it so far.

One of my favourite books of all time. It is part of a trilogy and I have read the second one. The third one is on my wish list!
Yes, I hate it with a passion!
@Martine Why? I was thinking of starting it.
@Mark, poorly written, flat cartoonish characters, longwinded, terrible dialogue. There’s truly nothing good I can say about this book and for the life of me I do not understand why so many people rave about it.
@Martine Yikes, thx.
That is 1 person’s opinion. If I listened to every person who hated a book I’d be reading nothing.
@Beth Yeah, it’s all about what one looks for in literature. One will see trash while another sees Tolstoy.
@Mark in the Great America Reads poll of best American books the book series placed 23rd. It was ahead of The Stand, Alice in Wonderland, Great Expectations and the Catcher in the Rye. I read the first two in series and thought they were wonderful. You have to be committed but if you like it from the start it will be enjoyable.
@Beth, of course, I totally agree. I don’t say it shouldn’t be read. I only say I loathed it. That’s a valid opinion too ?
I have read all three. Brilliant. The tv series was also very good.
All 3 books wonderful, even that I read Them in Danish, prefer english books.
Yes – it took me a while but really got into it.
@Claire it does take a while, because it is long. I am slowly inching my way through it.

Yes i thought it was great and have enjoyed sequel and other books of his. There is a lot to learn about history and actually what it was like to live in those times, as well as great characters and story.
It is one of my favorite books of all time.
Loved it!
Yes- I loved it! It was definitely not like anything else I have ever read.
I lived it too! The size if it is intimidating at first, but you forget about that when you get engrossed in the story.

Brilliant
Classic ??
It’s the best series ever, seriously!
Loving it
It’s a slow moving vehicle that book – but it sticks with you. If you are in a hurry, I think it is hard to enjoy, if you have patience with it, it is enjoyable…
Brilliant way to describe it ?
One of my favourite books. Follett is a great author
I read it many yrs back and have read it again in recent yrs-excellent!
Fabulous! It’s a trilogy, so pace yourself.
Fantastic book!
Brilliant. Loved it.
Read it. I only thought it was ok. Some parts were a little gruesome for me.
Love it! Just finished it again for the second time.
Loved it
Yes. Read it years ago. Loved it
Didn’t think I would like it since it’s not what I would ordinarily read. But my husband got it in audio to listen to on a long road trip. We really enjoyed it and were anxious to finish it when home. It’s length gives you lots of time to get to know characters so they do stick with you.
Loved it
That was a slow almost painful at times read for me
I have to admit, though. The book is so descriptive of the structure of churches that I don’t know what he’s talking about, and it does make it a bit difficult to imagine what the churches look like. It also makes it hard for me to imagine where the characters are going in situations.
One of my favourite books of all time
Awesome book ?
…and your thoughts on it so far are…?
So far, the book is very good. It takes time to build up, though.
