Are you thinking of ‘Scarlett’ by Alexandra Ripley? I have read and enjoyed that too ?

1
Donna

Erica Florence yeah, gave me the ending I needed ?

0
Donna

I think I’m going to have to read them all again now, that’ll be my nostalgic read for the popsugar challenge ?

0
Sivashna

I read my mother’s copy in the 60’s as a young teen and was hooked. I read it over and over, captivated by Rhett and Scarlet.
Then, as happens, I forgot about it.
I went back to it in my 50’s and found it indescribably sad and depressing. As an adult I ‘saw’ all the sad futility of war and the effect it has on people and their lives.

The Road To Tara by Anne Edwards is a biography of Margaret Mitchell, the author of Gone With The Wind.
It is an extraordinary story and well worth a read!
All Edward’s biographies are excellent.

Absolutely brilliant book!!! I will never tire of reading it ? ?
One tip though…if you are going to watch the film too, watch it BEFORE reading the book ? If you watch it after, you will realise just how much they had to leave out in order to make it a watchable length!!

I love it and hate it at the same time. It’s a brilliant epic read, and it’s also appallingly racist (Ashley is a Klansman). I’d say it’s worth reading though.

2
Reply
Jackie

@Cassandra I know what you mean, as I said I loved it, but I think you have to read it as an historical novel, although the year it was published there were still lynchings going on ?

It’s one of my all time favourite books. Yes, today both the book and the film, best film ever IMHO, are racist in our eyes and minds now, but Margaret Mitchell grew up, hearing about the glorious South, the cause, the war and the plantations worked by slaves and when she wrote it,and the film was made it wasn’t racist. So historical goggles on for both read and film. Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar, best supporting actress. And also, the film leaves a lot out, but had it been made today we’d probably have it in at least 5 parts, being 15 hours long. They managed to make The Hobbit into 3 very long films after all, and that’s a much shorter book. So sorry for this very long rambling answer. ?

I remember my mum telling me how she and her friends went to see the film when it first came out. One cinema showed all 4 and half hours. They had a long interval in the middle and everyone took sandwiches. There was a big mass picnic in the interval!
Another cinema showed it in two halves -they had to come back the next week for the second half!
At least they only had to wait a week – with LOR we had to wait a year between parts!

I used to love it but have become more and more unable to cope with ‘our heroes’ being in the Ku Klux Klan. I know it’s primarily a romance, but I find the racial content profoundly disturbing.
