Not only have I read it, I observed a whole unit on it being taught to 8th graders during my student teaching. They included a research project on Dr. Oliver Sacks and his work from the book “Awakenings.” They then compared it to the movie to see what was the same/different. It was all about the ethics of caring for those with differences, and building compassion. It was a really cool unit to see.

When my dad had a severe brain injury he lived 4 years. He went through so much therapy and did recover more than expected, but he knew he wasn’t OK, and after a couple of years he began losing his abilities. The worst part was that he would realize that he was slipping away and become angry and frightened. It reminded me of this book. It was heartbreaking.

He had told me years before that he did not want to die like that. His dad had a long slow death. I understood his unhappiness and yet there was nothing I could do to help.

Disagree…loved the movie. Very moving. Saw it with my intermediate school class and was a real lesson in empathy. Cliff and Claire were excellent! Would highly recommend in addition to reading Flowers.

I thought the movie moved to far away from the book. I would love for a serious adaption of the book to be done for film or tv instead of the more psychedelic one that exists.
