In this Rashomon-style mystery story, each member of a high-school literature club presents her own version of the death of the group’s leader.

At a prestigious girl’s school, a student has died. Itsumi was the most beautiful, charismatic, and popular girl at St. Mary’s Academy for Girls. She was also the president of the exclusive and tight-knit Literature Club. One week after her death, the members of her beloved club gather in her memory. But as they each testify to what happened in the days leading up to the tragic event, their accusations turn shocking—

Why, and how, did Itsumi really die?

In this glittering and gripping murder mystery, everyone has their own motivations and version of the truth. In its portrayal of the alliances, treacheries, and invisible tensions between friends and frenemies, The Dark Maidens keeps readers guessing and shows that what is sweet can just as easily be poisonous.

@Robert want to read it, but heard different reviews. Like hard go get into, stopped reading halfway, and others loved it. So I’m thinking of purchasing thru Thrift Books .. don’t want to spend full price for it

I think what holds some people up is it is a translation. Being set in Sweden it has references we aren’t used to. I actually like that. I like hearing other terms for things. I put this as one of my favorites I’ve ever read

2
Jacki

@Robert so meaning language barrier at some points.

For some people using terms like kilometers, Celsius and stuff like that is a big turn off. I don’t mind it at all. I also love the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy

If you like stories set in Scotland, my recent Scots/English translation of Sir Gibbie by George MacDonald is endorsed by C S Lewis’s stepson Douglas Gresham. Link to order is below the video here on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYZ19lHp6j8

Another by George MacDonald, if you like fantasy, is Phantastes, which C S Lewis said “baptised his imagination”. And then by C S Lewis himself, one of my favourites is The Great Divorce, a sort of vision of heaven/hell/purgatory along the lines of Dante, but not as daunting as it sounds. It’s short, compelling, and even comedic at points.
