I attended a talk she gave about the book at the Library of Congress Book Festival earlier this month. I didn’t know much about the book other than it was a hot best seller, but was interested in what she had to say. Westover said Obama had called her to tell her how moving he found it. So, on top of her other accomplishments, she said it was like an out of body experience talking to him! She said she wrote the entire book before she was sure she was going to show it to anyone, much less try to get it published, as a cathartic exercise in dealing with her family. She seemed to indicate that it was the book itself that severed bonds, but that’s not the way I read the story. She was very clear that she was not trying to denigrate Mormonism, just her family’s interpretations the religion.

I really liked Glass Castle. Did you read other book, Half Broke Horses? That was good as well. I think it was based on her books grandmother’s life.

Loved it, but had to put it down a lot to absorb what was happening. Difficult subject, but very glad I read it.
