No I don’t think it does. I’m a introvert. Reading is my escape. But I get anxiety about being in groups of people. When in large groups of people. I need to decompress. Need alone time.

Yeah well reading a lot of books means a lot of alone time!

1
Kara

Yes it does. When I’ve got to much my mind, it’s hard to read.

1
Karen

No but it’s a useful tool if you are one. Helps you to be alone and to avoid small talk and conversation

Is being antisocial so bad?

MelanieQuestion author

i don’t know but maybe you miss out on a lot. I’m looking for a man and I’m not gonna find him cooped up in my room reading a book (unfortunately!☹️).

It’s not my case cause I’m naturally an introvert but I think yes because if you love reading you need more time alone

Yeah I’m more of an introvert than extrovert. Just wondering if it’s possible to be an extrovert and also love reading books!

1
Arielle

It’s very possible. I know plenty of people that are outgoing, love interacting and talking but they also spend some time reading. You can do both

1
Jordan

I read a lot and I am not what you would call an introvert by any stretch of the imagination. Depends on you

It doesn’t make you one. it’s often just a coincidence or correlation. Some of the people I know who got into medical school (medical school selects for outgoing, more extroverted people) are very talkative and social yet they have read plenty of books

No. Everyone is a reader, even though he’s not aware of being one for his reading textbooks or pamphlets only. But not anyone is a introvert or antisocial.

Arielle

No, absolutely not. A lot of introverts, like myself, do read because it’s a mostly solitary and quiet activity and that’s what we thrive on. But the act of reading itself does not make someone anti-social. People of many different personality types enjoy reading.

Being a reader only makes you gain information. Your personal proclivities are your own.

I’m autistic so I’m naturally inclined towards introverted anti socialness

No it’s otherwise. Personality is genetic. If you’re an introvert you’re born with it 🙂 (including myself?) so I don’t think reading or not reading can change your personality. I see it more like a hobby of introverts.

Exactly.

No,I’m just an introvert who happens to love reading. But I also like to do other solitary activities such a counted cross-stitch, baking, jigsaw puzzles, listening to music. I get enough social activity at my job and don’t need people around 24/7.

I am an introvert. But I know plenty of readers who aren’t. I don’t think the two are connected.

No. introversion and extroversion are biologically hardwired in the brain and determines how a person responds to stimuli. These are not personality traits one “picks up.” However, yes, readers are more likely be demographically introverts. Introverts gravitates towards solo activities more than extroverts (because extroverts charge their brain battery by social interaction whereas introverts recharge through quiet alone time away from excessive stimulation.) A really great book to read about this is Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t stop Talking by Susan Cain

No, I like spending time by myself but I am also a very sociable person. I don’t believe that human beings needs to spend every waking hour with other human beings, it’s important to have time to yourself to relax and recharge your batteries. I choose to spend my relaxation time reading, others may play computer games, exercise or watch tv etc. Humans are complex and sometimes we just need to be alone, it’s not a negative thing.

Neither. It makes you educated. There’s plenty of extroverted social people who read voraciously.

I’m anything but antisocial, I’m usually the person getting everyone else talking 😛 I also know plenty of people who don’t really read and have trouble socialising in general, stuff like that comes down to you, not whether you are a reader or not, in my opinion of course.

Reading can’t make you an introvert, that’s an inborn trait, but a lot of introverts like to read as it suits their need for some alone time and a break from a majority extrovert world.

I’m an Introvert at heart and have always been a “reader” so the two go hand-in-hand for me. I can be “sociable” if I have to be, but rather not as it absolutely drains me…

I’m not “a reader”. Reading is a part of my life but has nothing to do with my social life. Does doing the housework make me antisocial? – As much as it takes up some time that I could possibly use to meet friends. Same with reading – I don’t show it up, just read books when I feel like it, I absolutely can’t see any relation with my social life.

Not really. I mean if I’m in the middle of a really good heart of a book I’ll get a little antisocial, but I don’t get to the point where I ignore everyone just for the sole purpose of reading a book.
