Yes, I try to read 10 chapters a day and a book every 3 days max. I have planned an entire reading list by month through dec. I’m trying to be more organized to meet my yearly goal this year.

I had enough of such planning when I was in college. . .a long time ago! I don’t like the pressure of reading deadlines, even when they are my own. 🙂

No, can’t imagine reading like that I think it would feel like a chore to me. Sometimes I read I book in 2 days and sometimes it takes a week – I just read completely for pleasure & when I’m in the mood.

Laura

Only when I’m not enjoying the book as much as I thought I would. I rarely quit a book so makes it easier and I get more motivated to get through it. Never books I’m enjoying though.

Yes. I’m reading a really great book right now but life is getting in the way. And i didn’t read for 3 days because one thing after another. A lot of craziness right now and sometimes that can be overwhelming and I just don’t take the time to read. So I told myself I must read 100 pages a day so I can allow myself the space to 1)escape for awhile each day and 2) finish this book that is actually really really good.

Life is tough sometimes. Books really do help.

Not really but I don’t like leaving a book with a few pages. I try to read the last hundred pages in one sitting if I can, and certainly by lights out.

Nope what’s the point, sometimes life takes over, too rigid for me a book should be savoured, relished. Don’t put pressure on yourself reading should be a pleasant experience

1
Reply
Claire

Not since I had to study! Reading should be pleasurable, not with deadlines, there are enough deadlines in life.

No I hate planning at the best of times! I generally read at bedtime (so who know when I’ll call asleep!) Or occassionally after work and at weekends (who knows when someone will want me, or I simply need to get off my butt and DO something… Like housework ?) So planning doesn’t work for me, I just relax and go with the flow (when it comes to reading anyway! Maybe not a general rule i adhere to in life unfortunately!)

Depends on why I’m reading. If I have an assignment for a Bible Study or need to read a book I’m not really fond of for a book Club, I’ll see how many pages per day I need to get through, and mark them off with book marks. Otherwise I read my recreational books at their pace, which is usually 2-3 books a week.

I am a slow reader. Mix that with home life and that equals never getting any books read. I am trying to find a system that works for me, simply because I *do* love to read and it does relax me, but I sometimes have to schedule it in and set goals or else it just doesn’t happen. I get so discouraged when I go to the library, pick up 3-4 books and then have to return several of those books, if not all, unread. Especially when I was soooo excited to read them to start with.

I dont know. Maybe I am going about it in the wrong way.

I’m also a slow reader, I’m on Moby Dick since December. When your kids get bigger you’ll have more time, just keep trying!

2
Michelle

I have never done that before….BUT…. I did catch myself yesterday looking at page 26 and wondering how many I had to read to finish The Woman in Cabin 10 by the 10th of Feb when our book club meeting is. No matter how hard I try I just can not get into that book!! 🙁

I check the number of pages, divide them by the number of days I want to read it in. Sad I know but it’s just my thing

3

Ann

I then put paper clips in the divided pages so I know how much I need to read in one night

1

I can’t plan it. Too much life happening. I wish I was a faster reader but I am a classic subvocal reader. I’ve tried to change but not been successful. I hear the inflections in my head. Maybe that’s a theater background? So I read when I feel like it. Sometimes pushing through to get something done. I seldom abandon.

2
Reply
Febinger

I’ve never heard that before, subvocal. I am also a slow reader who does that. I enjoy it so much, I’m not through one book yet this year

1
Nancy

i used to feel guilty about that internal speech. Anyone who teaches speed reading would train you to get beyond that. But there is a lot of discussion about long term comprehension and memory of content. I think it’s all just individual and what works for you. I was jealous of people who could knock out a lot of books. Now I don’t care and don’t compare!! Happy reading!

2
Febinger

New motto!!!!! I don’t care, and don’t compare. Brilliant!

It’s never occurred to me to set a goal of numbers of books to read per year. I just enjoy the process…. and if it takes me a long time, I savor it.
