Does a quote from another famous author on the cover of a book make you buy that book?

Does a quote from another famous author on the cover of a book make you buy that book?
No it’s annoying.
Nope.
No it doesn’t encourage me
No. It puts me off just as much as “The next Stephen King”. For example. X
I also don’t pay attention to it
No it rather puts me of to be honest
No.
No
No
I guess thats a definite no then lol ??
No
Not really.
No.I read the blurb then the first page.
this is like deja vu all over again. For me as a reader, no. Would I put a good quote from a famous author on one of my books, if I ever received one – hell yes.
No
No.
no.
No
It’s a case of favouritism for me. If I see a quote from an author I like I’ll download s sample as I expect their recommendation to be close to their style of writing, in which case I’ll probably like the book. If I see a quote from an author I don’t enjoy I’ll skip over that book as I imagine it’ll be similar in style to an author I dislike.
Not when it’s Stephen King recommending Richard Bach, no.
Richard Bachman ??
No.
Nope! It might even put me off if an author who I don’t particularly ‘like’ endorses another author’s book!
No not at all. I always assume it’s a friend or a writer from the same publishing house.
No, and if the book turns out to be rubbish I lose respect for the illustrious author that blurbed it.
Nope.
No
If it was from one of my favourite authors I would definitely have a look at the book – blurb and first page and then decide.
I wonder whether thay read book before making a comment
Was asking myself that
@John Yes, they do
Yes, they do. And they won’t blurb a book they don’t genuinely like.
@Anne thanks
No. A review quote possibly but not an author recommendation as it smacks of mutual back scratching.
It won’t hurt, but it won’t help either.
Cover is first selling point, blurb the second. If a potential reader is intrigued by your cover, they’ll read your blurb. If they’re intrigued by your blurb, they’re a likely consumer.
No
Sometimes it gives you an idea as to the genre but wont really influence me.
No.
No
No
Not in the slightest
No
No ..
No; the opposite I suppose
No. The first thing I look at is the cover art, then the name of the book and lastly the author. Then I read the front matter and perhaps one or two pages and if I like its a deal.
No
No, nothing makes me buy the book in of itself, I am interested firstly by the cover or a recommendation, then I read the blurb, then I read reviews, then I download a sample. If the sample grabs me, then I will buy the book but won’t if it doesn’t.
Nope I never even notice them lol
No
Me neither ?
No
No
No. I prefer good solid recommendations and reviews from other readers who enjoy the same type of book as I do!
@Alyson Authors are readers too
@Anne sorry Anne yes, I meant people I know who like the same as me. I have found that authors don’t necessarily read books that are the same as those they write 🙂
@Alyson I understand
Nope
No
It definitely encourages me to look closer at a book
I also look for quotes from fellow bloggers.
If I like the author and/or blogger who has quoted I’m probably more likely to buy the book
No.
If it was a paperback probably but I’m a Kindle girl ?
Not necessarily. That author’s taste and mine may not match. I always read a preview to determine whether or not I want to read a book.
No but it makes me more interested in reading preview
No
Nope
No
Nope
No
No cause they all say same thing!
Definitely not. If anything it puts me off.
What is worse in my mind is authors who claim on their dust jacket that they’ve sold x million copies, when we’ve never ever seen their name before.
@George i wish
@George does that happen?
I just finished reading a book by an author who claims to have sold 7 million copies in 20 languages worldwide. I am a avid eclectic reader for the last 70+ years, and I’ve never heard of the guy. With that kind of sales, he’d be more popular than many of the authors we see all the time.
@George did you look him up? It could be true? Is he traditionally published? Did he make the claim, or a publisher? Who is it?
I didn’t think they can make that claim unless its true, shows what i know lol .
No it puts me off. I know of some who don’t even read the books but have written a quote because they are returning a favour to the other author after they have helped promote their book in some way. I never feel the quote is genuine although in some cases it probably is x
@Caroline the authors I know, read the books
All my quotes have been from authors who have genuinely read the book. I get an email with a longer version of what they think of the book or a phone call to talk about it. I only give quotes myself if I have read the book.
Never really thought about it, but i suppose it does, yes
Never
Nope
@Michael No. Cynical, but I doubt that they’ve read it.
@Mike unfair
I’ve been asked to endorse a couple of books and always read them….
The comment might influence me, but not the author of the comment – if it chimes with me, it will stir some interest xx
No
No .x
Yes ……
Not at all.
No
No it puts me off. I always think do they work for the same publisher or returning the favour. Its only in recent years i have noticed it.
No I read the synopsis of the book on the cover and if it is interesting I buy the book.
No.
No I look at the cover/title then read the synopsis first. I am often drawn to an author whose books I have read before and enjoyed especially when they write about a specific character
Nahhh just needs to be a cool looking cover and a good story on the back lol
Yes, most certainly. That is providing I believe they have read the book first.
The bookshops love to see it.
Nope.
Depends on whether I’ve heard of them, and whether I like their books.
No
Never
buy? No. Look more closely? Yes.
This is so interesting , i wondered if having a quote on the book made any difference, so i think I know the answer .
Absolutely not.
No
No
Nope, they’re normally paid for the quote so for me it makes it totally impartial and therefore… irrelevant ?♂️
@Lee paid?? Who told you this?
No, it’s interesting & great if a book has an endorsement but it’s makes no difference as to whether I buy it or not.
Not at all!
No not at all
No not at all
No. I always wonder if it’s the publishing house using artistic licence.
Nope
No.
I asked David Bellamy for a cover quote for a book about animals that bit or stung.
He agreed…
Cover quote was ‘Ouch…’ It still makes me smile.
No. Been debating on doing it myself for my son book though lol
No.
No
No. Its ‘cover, blurb, first two pages’.
But I doubt most of us would turn down a celeb quote on our books covers as authors B|
Nope
No
No!
no
No
I have seen so many blurbs by Lee Child I wonder when he has time to write his own books.
I didn’t want to mention names but yes Lee does lend his name out a lot
No
No
Not anymore
No
Nope
It’ll catch my interest, and make me read the back cover blurb.
No! The opposite because I suspect pressure from publisher!
No.
