this is like deja vu all over again. For me as a reader, no. Would I put a good quote from a famous author on one of my books, if I ever received one – hell yes.

It’s a case of favouritism for me. If I see a quote from an author I like I’ll download s sample as I expect their recommendation to be close to their style of writing, in which case I’ll probably like the book. If I see a quote from an author I don’t enjoy I’ll skip over that book as I imagine it’ll be similar in style to an author I dislike.

If it was from one of my favourite authors I would definitely have a look at the book – blurb and first page and then decide.

@John Yes, they do

0

Yes, they do. And they won’t blurb a book they don’t genuinely like.

1
John

@Anne thanks

0
Bill

No. A review quote possibly but not an author recommendation as it smacks of mutual back scratching.

David

It won’t hurt, but it won’t help either.

Cover is first selling point, blurb the second. If a potential reader is intrigued by your cover, they’ll read your blurb. If they’re intrigued by your blurb, they’re a likely consumer.

No. The first thing I look at is the cover art, then the name of the book and lastly the author. Then I read the front matter and perhaps one or two pages and if I like its a deal.

No, nothing makes me buy the book in of itself, I am interested firstly by the cover or a recommendation, then I read the blurb, then I read reviews, then I download a sample. If the sample grabs me, then I will buy the book but won’t if it doesn’t.

What is worse in my mind is authors who claim on their dust jacket that they’ve sold x million copies, when we’ve never ever seen their name before.

2
Reply
Jane

@George i wish

0
Anne

@George does that happen?

0
George

I just finished reading a book by an author who claims to have sold 7 million copies in 20 languages worldwide. I am a avid eclectic reader for the last 70+ years, and I’ve never heard of the guy. With that kind of sales, he’d be more popular than many of the authors we see all the time.

0
Anne

@George did you look him up? It could be true? Is he traditionally published? Did he make the claim, or a publisher? Who is it?

1
Kerry

I didn’t think they can make that claim unless its true, shows what i know lol .

0
Caroline

No it puts me off. I know of some who don’t even read the books but have written a quote because they are returning a favour to the other author after they have helped promote their book in some way. I never feel the quote is genuine although in some cases it probably is x

1
Reply
Anne

@Caroline the authors I know, read the books

1
Kerry

All my quotes have been from authors who have genuinely read the book. I get an email with a longer version of what they think of the book or a phone call to talk about it. I only give quotes myself if I have read the book.
