Definitely without words or it becomes distracting…?

0
Sandra

You know, I can read anywhere, under just about any circumstance, tv, crowded places, in the park, anywhere, but I don’t like music playing otherwise. I mean if there’s music in a restaurant or someplace I can ignore it but at home that radio or player has to be off. It’s strange that I’ve never really thought about it at all.

1
Reply
AbdussalamQuestion author

Now that i made u think about it, you ll maybe feel distracted…sorry ?

0
Sandra

No, not at all. I just mean it’s probably always distracted me at home but I’ve never thought about it. It’s just autopilot. If there’s music playing and I’m reading at home or someplace that I have control of the music, I shut it off.

If it’s quiet… if there’s a screaming kid or people being ridiculous then no.

If there’s just whispering and regular noise then yes lol

I listen to music.. would be highly unlikely to be a symphony – not my thing… music rarely distracts me…

I have also been known to sing to my 3 year old as I read… (on these occasions- probably not much reading really done!)?

Sometimes and it’s funny because some songs automatically bring back scenes from the book I was reading and sometimes when I think of a book I can almost hear the music I listened to.

Like the book the Oath makes me think of breaking Benjamin

Sometimes I listen to music while reading. Usually if I do, it’s music with lyrics.

1

You re among the minority because lyrics distract…happy reading

0
Amy

Sometimes they keep me focused and often (if I listen to the same set of songs) I will associate those some with the book. But they are times where I will get lost in a daydream because of the music. I tend to only listen to music when reading my favorite genre (romance) as those I get pretty sucked into and can read nonstop for hours. When I try reading outside my go to genre, I don’t do music. As, I get distracted way too easily with those. (They also take me longer to read though)

Yes to music in general but not Symphony. I have observed that depending on the genre that I am reading coupled with the music, the plot/characters feel more connected or strained. Say for example I am listening to R&B or Pop (old school) and reading a romance novel certain scenes gets either awkward, steamy or just down right cheesy sweet.

No, but if I am reading a book that mentions a song, I almost always have to stop reading, relisten to the song if I already know it and if I don’t know it track it down, listen to it and try and decide if it fits with the storyline,

I love the website http://noisli.com/ It allows you to create white noise in the background. You can blend together things like, “campfire, crickets, waves” or “fireplace, coffee house, thunderstorm.” So many options!!! They have an app too but I always just go to the website

I sometimes listen to classical, but not bombastic symphonies, however. Chamber music or classical piano, violin, or harpsichord works. If I’m reading something very modern I may go for light jazz.. Kenny G type stuff. But silence is fine. I can’t read with vocal music on.

1
