Yes. I felt like I’d read something similar before. I’m also a bit tired of all the back and forth in books. I gave up on it. Too many other books to read.

I’m growing weary of all the books jumping back and forth also. In the beginning of the book, when the father was speaking, I kept waiting for him to offer vittles out at the cement pond on Beverly Hillbillies. I’m finishing it b/c it’s a book club pick.

I did. I initially did not think I was going to care for it. But, because it was my book club’s monthly selection and book club was in a couple of days, I stuck with it. Discovered I really liked it! In fact, stayed up till 3:30am to finish it. Now, I’ll say it is one of my favorite books!

I loved the author’s style right from the beginning. About the time that I felt the story was going nowhere, I was hooked. The hype is needed to showcase the book, but it sometimes backfired because the reader is expecting “wow” from the beginning.

Julie

@Lana Your points are well taken. I was hooked with the amazing life-death set-up in the description of the marsh v the swamp. It is being made into a movie which I think will serve well those who struggled to continue or finish. I think I would just say to those struggling: trust that you will learn why the mother left and what became of her, trust that the author will provide some interesting twists and resolve some disappointing turns. That said, not every book is everyone’s “Oh, my!” experience. https://www.bookbub.com/blog/where-the-crawdads-sing-movie-reese-witherspoon

I had trouble at the beginning also. I so wanted something exciting to happen and not just descriptions of nature. Once I finished the book, I realized I should have taken my time and enjoyed the nature journey. I will reread the first half and just enjoy it. I loved the book.

Great discussion in book club tonight about this book. Only six were present to discuss. What I didn’t like (too much description about the scenery) others loved that part. I found it slow reading but glad I pushed through it.
Suggest google and read about the author. Very interesting.

@Catherine at what point. I’m on chapter 27 and still not into it

0
Nanci

@Trisha every book isn’t for every body. There was a lot of hype about this book and in some people’s
mind it just didn’t live up to it. You are a better reader than I – I usually give a book a few chapters and if it hasnt grabbed me by then I give it up!

0
Trisha

@Nanci thx. I always feel bad when I can’t finish. But just can not do it. Moving on to something new

0
Catherine

@Trisha, If I remember correctly, it gets interesting about page 100, however I tell my Book Club members to read at least to the page that is the same number as their age. ?

0
Trisha

@Catherine well I by passed that at page 46. So I will move on. Thx

1
Trisha

Yes totally. I just can’t get into. Slow moving and just not into characters. Surprised with all the great reviews. Sorry everyone. Just not for me.
