Yes. I felt like I’d read something similar before. I’m also a bit tired of all the back and forth in books. I gave up on it. Too many other books to read.
I’m growing weary of all the books jumping back and forth also. In the beginning of the book, when the father was speaking, I kept waiting for him to offer vittles out at the cement pond on Beverly Hillbillies. I’m finishing it b/c it’s a book club pick.
I did. I initially did not think I was going to care for it. But, because it was my book club’s monthly selection and book club was in a couple of days, I stuck with it. Discovered I really liked it! In fact, stayed up till 3:30am to finish it. Now, I’ll say it is one of my favorite books!
I loved the author’s style right from the beginning. About the time that I felt the story was going nowhere, I was hooked. The hype is needed to showcase the book, but it sometimes backfired because the reader is expecting “wow” from the beginning.
@Lana Your points are well taken. I was hooked with the amazing life-death set-up in the description of the marsh v the swamp. It is being made into a movie which I think will serve well those who struggled to continue or finish. I think I would just say to those struggling: trust that you will learn why the mother left and what became of her, trust that the author will provide some interesting twists and resolve some disappointing turns. That said, not every book is everyone’s “Oh, my!” experience. https://www.bookbub.com/blog/where-the-crawdads-sing-movie-reese-witherspoon
With all the hype I expected to enjoy it from the start, but I’m struggling to get into it too. It’s our book club selection this month. Hoping it picks up soon!
I had trouble at the beginning also. I so wanted something exciting to happen and not just descriptions of nature. Once I finished the book, I realized I should have taken my time and enjoyed the nature journey. I will reread the first half and just enjoy it. I loved the book.
Great discussion in book club tonight about this book. Only six were present to discuss. What I didn’t like (too much description about the scenery) others loved that part. I found it slow reading but glad I pushed through it. Suggest google and read about the author. Very interesting.
I didn’t have a hard time getting into it and I really enjoyed the story. I hope you can stay with it because so much is revealed about why her mother left and then there’s the ending…twists and turns and then “wow”!
@Trisha every book isn’t for every body. There was a lot of hype about this book and in some people’s mind it just didn’t live up to it. You are a better reader than I – I usually give a book a few chapters and if it hasnt grabbed me by then I give it up!
@Trisha, If I remember correctly, it gets interesting about page 100, however I tell my Book Club members to read at least to the page that is the same number as their age. ?
I did initially but I just kept going and really liked it then!
Yes. I listened to it in Audible. But once I waded through the first part, it got better.
No.
I have seen some people post the same thing. I have it now but I am not very far into it to say.
Not at all!

I was hooked from the first page.
Yes but stick with it.
No, not at all! Love this book!
I did too – but stuck with it and it was worth it – it gets much better
Keep going its great.
I am having trouble listening TO ONE DAY IN DECEMBER tho.
One day in December gets better as well.
@Donna I loved that book! One of my favorites!!
I read it last week and think it got way too repetitive. I did finish it though and it was an easy read.
I thought it was just okay.
Yes, overrated
Loved this book!
Yes I’m having trouble
I actually liked the beginning best and was disappointed by the hype.
I think that is my problem with so many books lately. I expect too much from all the hype and get let down.
@Stephanie I agree with you on the hype.
Yes, I thought it was slow at first. Hang in there it gets better
Not even a little bit. I loved it.
Yes! I’m in the minority because I didn’t care for it that much.
@Laura me too!
@Laura can’t even finish it
I thought it was a bit slow in the beginning BUT am so glad I stuck with it. One of the best reads of our book club !
Not in the least. From the very first page, I was pulled in by that vulnerable, abandoned little girl. Oh, my heart.
Not enjoying this. Very disappointed I can’t finish it.
Not at all. I read it in less than 48hrs.

I loved it but everyone has their own tastes in books.

I really enjoyed I read first then listened to it on audiobook
No way! Best book?
Not once I started, but the first page threw me. I swear I looked at that first page 5x before I actually dove in.
@Carol I am struggling. Only 20% through
I’m glad I’m not alone. I speed read and you can’t with the way this is written. I find myself having to reread a lot.
I read the whole thing in a day. I couldn’t put it down!
I’m going to try to finish it today. I’m only maybe 75 pages in.
@Ashley Me too – or at least finish this weekend – only 25% done on the kindle
@Carin I sprained my ankle so what else is there to do but read ?
I had it as an audio book and couldn’t get into it. I had to return it but will try to listen to it again in a few months.
No it’s one of the best books I have read in years. I loved the characters and they became so important to me.
Oh no, course… I’m from the South!
No. Fantastic book!
I listened to it and it was just okay to me. For me there are better books out there…
I did not enjoy it at all, and I really really wanted to!
I did not enjoy it at all, and I really really wanted to!
I did not enjoy it at all, and I really really wanted to!
I did for the first 50 pages but I kept with it and it was great!
Fabulous book!
Give it a bit more time for it to cast its spell, I think you’ll find it worth it.
It was very slow for me. Couldn’t get into it.
I enjoyed every bit of it.
Oh do persevere, it is a great read Linda.
No, I really liked it! Couldn’t put it down.
No! Loved it from the first page!
No, loved it from the beginning.
With all the hype I expected to enjoy it from the start, but I’m struggling to get into it too. It’s our book club selection this month. Hoping it picks up soon!
@Carie keep reading
@Pam I will!
I am on hold for it for like 6 months.
Our book club will be reading and discussing this book. I’m looking forward to reading it. Hope that I will enjoy it!
Read it for book club. Slow reading. But it was worth it.
Haven’t read it yet. Have it on audible though.
I had trouble at the beginning also. I so wanted something exciting to happen and not just descriptions of nature. Once I finished the book, I realized I should have taken my time and enjoyed the nature journey. I will reread the first half and just enjoy it. I loved the book.
Loved that book. Could not put it down from the beginning.
Loved it. Couldn’t put it down.
Loved it!
I’ve heard others say this … they also stated that after they got into it they couldn’t put it down. Myself, I loved the book!
I enjoyed it, but didn’t like the ending. However I don’t spoil it for you it was still a great read!
I’m reading this book, on page 95 and do find it slow going.
No it’s one of my favorites
Yes, did not ever love it. Too much scenery, not enough action. Somewhat implausible
Too much about the feathers ?
I thought it was implausible.
@Dorothy But then again are most books unless they are biographies.
Not really. I just can’t see a child that young on their own.
This was one of the best I read last year. The writing is beautiful. Like if Mary Oliver wrote a novel!
Yes! ❤

Suggest google and read about the author. Very interesting.
I loved this book!

@Shannon You will like it
Stick with it, it builds and is good!?
@Catherine at what point. I’m on chapter 27 and still not into it
@Trisha every book isn’t for every body. There was a lot of hype about this book and in some people’s
mind it just didn’t live up to it. You are a better reader than I – I usually give a book a few chapters and if it hasnt grabbed me by then I give it up!
@Nanci thx. I always feel bad when I can’t finish. But just can not do it. Moving on to something new
@Trisha, If I remember correctly, it gets interesting about page 100, however I tell my Book Club members to read at least to the page that is the same number as their age. ?
@Catherine well I by passed that at page 46. So I will move on. Thx
Yes totally. I just can’t get into. Slow moving and just not into characters. Surprised with all the great reviews. Sorry everyone. Just not for me.
Loved it from the very beginning… especially the beautiful imagery and the way Owens pulled me into the story.
