I quite enjoyed it but it’s not the masterpiece I assumed it would be.

I am sorely disappointed after the rave reviews it got!

0
Tracy

Hated it. I struggled all the way through because of the rave reviews. But in my opinion it was awful.
Now if I see in a book synopsis stating
“if you loved girl on a train you’ll love this”
I don’t bother with the book at all. x

It just doesn’t make any sense to me at all – I have read books with worse reviews that have been miles better than this!

Christopher

No not at all.

I found it dull. It got a bit better towards the end, but still wasn’t great.

I didn’t like it either. It was hard to get into. Some of those books that say “If you loved The Girl on The Train” were much better then The Girl on The Train. ? I don’t think I’ll be reading the author’s new book.

It was an ok read for me. Gave it three stars, I think. I found Rachel irritating and worked out the ending before it came.

I haven’t seen the film but decided to try the book and see what all the fuss is about. I found it an easy to read, enjoyable romp, but definitely not a masterpiece.

A friend of mine struggled first time and gave up. However she went back to it recently and ploughed through it. Sometimes it comes down to timing ?

I hate not finishing a book so am going to persevere with it but it just doesn’t seem to make sense. She’s gone from being on the train watching this family to being the centre of the whole thing basically overnight?

1

Pamela

That’s pretty much all she does
Travels by train!!!

1

I’m really confused as to why you would pretend to go to work just to travel past your old house?

Yes I couldn’t figure out why it was so popular the first time I read it. All the characters seemed interchangeable but it was a bookclub selection so I reread it and enjoyed it more at the second reading.

Found it light enough to read but not original at all. Shades of Rear Window and Gaslight, for starters. Ending was utterly ludicrous IMHO 🙂

Didn’t read it but the film was actually better than expected. Whereas book AND film of Gone girl terrible I thought. Didn’t bother to finish book as it was obvious what was happening and the film was dreadful.

I am debating this too 🙁

0

I thought the end was too drawn out. Could have been 50 pages shorter. Listened on audio book – on the train! The main character’s whining got on my nerves a bit. Wanted to give her a good shake but suppose that’s good character development

I don’t agree. The ending is nonsense, from a procedural point of view, apart from anything else 🙂 But we all have different, diverse, taste.

The ends was pants! Wrong on so many levels 🙂

1
Katie

I wouldn’t say it was my favourite read, but the storyline intrigued me, and I did finish it. Not one I’d go back to. Sometimes I find it difficult getting into a book, so I leave it and go on to something else. Then I go back to the one I gave up on and find myself hooked. Come to the conclusion that books are a bit like music…depends on what style, or genre you’re mind wants at the time.

I always thought behind closed doors was a total marmite book but it really seems this is. I agree with one other review that I liked it but felt it was too long! Funny how easily we can all like the same book and then be so split on another!

I enjoyed Gone Girl, The Girl On The Train and Behind Closed Doors. I don’t normally enjoy the ‘popular’ books, but for me they were a little bit different from being police precedural, which although good, floods the market.
