The Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George (or anything else by Margaret George). The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Farber is an excellent book.

C.J. Sansom’s Shardlake series. Brilliant reads,set in Tudor England in the reign of Henry VIII. Have to be read in order,though. If you like the Medieval period,try Elizabeth Chadwick. Or Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series for the early 20th century.

My favourite historical fiction writers are Bernard Cornwell, Patrick Taylor, Arianna Franklin, Beverly Swerling, Matthew Pearl, Caleb Carr, CS Forrester, Patrick O’Brien, Tracy Chevalier (just read The Last Runaway for book club in May, it was the only book I hadn’t read by her and it was my favourite because I live in that area and some of the bldgs she mentions I have been in!), Frank Delancey, Edward Rutherford, Kate Morton, Patricia Harmann……..

A few years ago on the bus back from a country town tour where my amateur orchestra had just performed in a huge cathedral, I was mentioning to a fellow in the group about a story I was writing, set in a monastery and how the sounds from the performance had inspired me further. He recommended that book to me then, I got it out of the library the next week, and loved it.

@Jessica I have a friend that hated it because of the stuff towards the end (I thinking you can guess what if you’ve read it) but she really liked it up to that point. She said it had a really bad effect on her depression.

I just finished the first book last week. Taking a small break and reading an easy book or two (Everything, Everything and now Where’d You Go Bernadette) and then I’ll move onto book 2 in the Outlander series. 🙂

Try the ballad series by Sharyn mccrumb… she is absolutely wonderful. Her historical fiction relates to the Appalachian mountains the lands os Tennessee and North Carolina. The culture and traditions coupled with her excellent literary style of presentation is soul wrenching. Try it for sure
