I wrote a YA Urban fantasy about a girl getting rescued by a merman who’s trapped in the pool. Lots of adventure, and the big mystery of why he’s being held captive in a pool.
It’s called Lasera ~ Book One of the Mer Archives

The Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer are very good, and hold up okay for older audiences, too! I just reread them a few months ago.

I loved the Hush Hush Saga and The Mortal Instruments and the Unearthly Series at that age but my taste might be different. All of mine have like angels and a little romance tied in them but if you like suspense and supernatural/paranormal stuff you’d loves these series. Also the Percy Jackson series was good and the Divergent series. And of course The Hunger Games. I also enjoyed the Selection Series. That’s more romance but it has mystery and action and suspense incorporated through out. Also of course Harry Potter is my ultimate favorite.

Depends on the 14 year old… I suppose… I know I’ve been reading the Prydain chronicles ever since I was like 6-8 and they’re one of my favorites for all around “everything” stories… Sword fights, good, evil, romance, royalty, peasants, little bit of mystery, a good dose of magic… Just about everything critical for a good old fashioned faerie tale 😉
