My husband actually enjoyed these. They’re strictly childrens books though, so there isnt anything that I would hesitate to have children read or listen to. The man character is about 14 or so.

Since you have a 9 and 7 year old, I will recommend family fun series. My kids loved Judy Blume’s Fudge Series. The first one is “Fourth Grade Nothing.” It is about family life from the view of the oldest brother. My kids also loved the Henry Huggins Series and the Ramona Series by Beverly Clearly. They are all good natured and fun loving stories. And everyone will get something from it.

@Stephanie thank you! We read those last summer on the road.

I am glad you guys heard them. I am about to listen to the Fudge Series for the second time with my last daughter. We also enjoyed the Ralph S. Mouse series. The Magic Treehouse is good too but a bit repetitive. Shiloh is also good but it has some sad parts. We started Little House on the Prairie but we did not finish it yet.

Oh we loved the Narnia series.

The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers! It’s looooooong and so funny and full of puns and (harmless) innuendo and creatures and silly adventures.

Harry Potter, Narnia, Peter Jackson.

Personally I think The Hunger Games might be a bit too dark for a 9 and 7 year old, especially the last two books.

The Penderwicks.
Yes, the main family is 4 girls and one dad, but in the first book they meet a boy that lives where they are vacationing. Also it’s a summer story!!

A Wrinkle in Time. Mary Poppins. Chronicles of Narnia. Harry Potter. Artemis Fowl. Anything by Carl Hiaasen.
Maybe a Jim Gaffigan bio book? He’s funny and pretty g-rated.
There’s also a great mystery series I found through my library called Flavia De Luce ( #1 The Sweetness At the Bottom of the Pie)- the main character is a young girl from the 1950s who’s obsessed with chemistry and poison, and solves crimes. They’re funny and engaging, but not so complicated that a young kid wouldn’t like them- I’m 25 and I really enjoyed them

At The Back of the North Wind. My entire family, husband included, was held captive the whole book, not once did anyone ask to turn it off! (My kids were 16, 14 and 10 at the time.)

David Walliams audiobooks are always a good choice for when we travel (son age 9 and daughter age 6). We have also listened to the wizards of once series, Cressida cowell.
And sometimes the children dip in and out of the Enid Blyton classics like famous 5, or secret 7. (Sometimes magic faraway tree series)
Also the Worst Witch series

Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy, it’s a series of young reader fantasy novels with enough snark to keep grown-ups entertained. It feels a bit like Harry Potter.
