‘Light between the Oceans’ is one of my most recent reads.. It’s the sort that made me think and cry .. I haven’t seen the movie though so I can’t tell if it’s equally good .
Me before You was another one that makes you laugh, cry, and think as well .
For movies (which when I want a cry, they are quicker than a book LOL): Steel Magnolias. I also cried at Megan Leavy, Rudy, Remember the Titans, Gods and Generals & Gettysburg (I cried at the books they are based on too), Glory, just for some.
An Affair to Remember gets me every time as does The Way We Were. The last Parenthood episode. An episode of The Pitch where we realize the young pitcher’s father was killed in an accident taking her to practice.
Jim and Pam’s wedding scene in the Office when Michael and the Dunder Mifflin staff does the dance down the aisle, Gaga: Five Foot Two on Netflix, the first book in Jojo Moyes’ “Me ___” trilogy.
Movie: When Hachiko, the beloved dog (based on real life event) faithfully waits for his late master at the train station one last time and dreams of their reunion before dying. On a cold, lonely snowy night. Never ever it failed to make me cry ????????????????
The scene in Ordinary People when Calvin (Donald Sutherland) tells Beth (Mary Tyler Moore) that he doesn’t know if he loves her anymore. I love that entire movie – best thing that Redford ever directed.
I call it “gratuitous sadness” when a book is sad without delivering some real insight or making you feel compelled to be a better person. I’ve never seen anyone else use the term, but I think it’s perfect. fight depression and as stupid as it sounds I limit external things that make me sad. I do workout daily and eat a very strict diet, but to spite people telling me the two are unrelated, I feel like the fight is harder when I read sad novels and “gratuitous sadness” leaves me feeling so empty
When I was a kid unless I was in the hospital, I couldn’t cry without getting yelled at by my mom *unless* I was crying over a movie, book or song. Even though I no longer get yelled at for crying, I still feel most comfortable crying in response to a movie, song or book. I have a list of books, songs, and movies that I turn to when I “need a good cry.”
Show: This is Us Movie: A Dog’s Purpose or any war movie. Book: I don’t really cry often when it comes to books but I definitely shed some tears with Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley. Anything with dogs get me.
The episode of ER where Dr. MarkGreene dies. Oh, man, I can’t hear the Over the Rainbow medley by Israel K,which is featured in that episode, without getting very teary!
Jane Austen Book Club (book or movie), Julie and Julia (movie), Midnight in Paris (movie), Ghost (movie), Arrival (movie), Little Women (Movie), Whale Rider (movie) — for a few that make me cry but sometimes it just one scene rather than throughout the entire movie.
Movie “I can only imagine” story of Mercy Me.
Cyrano De Bergerac
That’s my 19 year old daughter’s favorite book! She even has a tattoo that she designed, of Cyrano and a rose. ❤️

@Sami The movie makes me bawl my eyes out too…Why do we do it to ourselves?
@Sarah I’ve always loved movies and books that make me cry. It can be very cathartic for those of us who find it difficult to show emotion otherwise 🙂
