I’m the dessert girl so I’m usually on Pinterest looking for stuff. Try peanut butter/caramel pound cake, it’s on http://foodnetwork.com/ this was a book club fav!

We do baked potatoes and everyone brings fillings like tuna mayo or beans or deli tubs and some folk bring little puddings or cake and then we all sit round the table and stuff ourselves!

2

KerryQuestion author

Love this idea!!

1
Jane

@Kerry – it works really well and it means the host only has to pop the potatoes in the microwave or oven and lay the table and then all the rest of the food or most of it arrives with your guests! And we usually have loads as everyone brings a couple of fillings at least.

@Jane Sounds good to me. ???

Each person who hosts makes up their own menu. We’ve had a nachos bar, pizza and wings, salads and finger foods.

Although I love wine, I belong to a mormon book club, so no wine☹. But one person recommends a book and cooks everything themed based on that book. Then next month, someone else hosts. And so on.

Gotta have the wine?

1

Our book club works like this. The person who is hosting is the one that picked the book the month before at last meeting and serves wine/coffee/soft drinks, whatever you guys do. Everyone else brings something: sweet, salty, spicy. Works out for the host because only responsible for the drinks.

Went to one where they we’re starting “American Psycho.” They only served cocaine which was weird and made me feel uncomfortable. Haven’t been back.

P.S that was a joke. I can’t find a freaking book club anywhere. Is their like a app or what? I’ve hit up local bookstores and libraries but all they have is kids groups. It’s annoying.

A friend of mine started up our group (in Leeds, UK) about 14 years ago! Why not start one up yourself and mention it to friends/at work…I’m sure you’ll soon get a group together. Good luck! X

2
KerryQuestion author

I couldn’t find one either, so I just started my own and told my friends to come over. 5years later….?

Sadly I gave up my book club. I was the only one that worked full time and had a young family. Found I didn’t have time to read my own books.
We had wine and nibbles

Question…..I never joined a book club because I felt I may be obligated to read a book that I didn’t want to read.
How does everyone deal with that issue?

1
Reply
Jef

There’s a new book every month. You can sit out a month. They’re not the boss of you. ?

2
Tara

1st rule of our bookclub is life is too short to read books you are not enjoying. 2nd rule of bookclub is come along regardless if you read the book or not. Only about 5 mins of our 2 hour meeting is about the book. The rest is about us chatting about husbands, kids, work, holidays, friends etc and eating and drinking.

3
Jef

@Tara so there’s no fighting, right…? Right?!

1
Tara

@Jef about what?

0
Tara

@Jef oh, I get it now. Sorry. I’m a bit slow 😉 Nup, no fighting.

We do Book Club here in Florida once a month and the food can be anything from just desserts to a full fledged meal! We are six people and get to strut out stuff twice a year. My daugter book clubs in Philly and I had the pleasure of being a visitor one month – the spread was a great and elegant antipasto! Cannot beat a good book and good food!

KerryQuestion author

At one of my book clubs everyone brings a dish. We eat first and then discuss the book. Another book club meets in a synagogue and I bring cookies and/ Danish and the place provides coffee and tea. and a third meets in an assisted living facility which gives us drinks and cookies. The last one meets in the clubhouse in my community, and then we go out to lunch. Personally, I prefer the one in which everyone brings a dish. The hostess coordinates the menu so no two people bring the same dish.

I actually dropped out of the only book club I ever joined because it became more about the food and wine, how it was served, who was going to bring what food next, and complaints about members sitting out on the month that was their natural food rotation. I wanted to read; they wanted to eat.

Our bookclub has 8 members. We meet in the private lounge area of a local community centre. We meet after dinner so it’s just wine and nibbles. Half our members cater 1 month and the next month the other half cater. It’s a bit of put luck, but most of the time we don’t double up. I tend to make a dip and bring nuts or cheese and crackers. Another member tends to bake a cake or slice. Other members bring a bottle of wine and chocolate.

We are 8 in our book club, we take it in turn to host. The host chooses the date, the book, the menu and the wine (of course).

Appetizers and desserts. Also depends on time of meeting. If it’s around dinner time it’s actual meals etc. if it’s after dinner it mainly desserts/small apps.
