I’m the dessert girl so I’m usually on Pinterest looking for stuff. Try peanut butter/caramel pound cake, it’s on http://foodnetwork.com/ this was a book club fav!
We do baked potatoes and everyone brings fillings like tuna mayo or beans or deli tubs and some folk bring little puddings or cake and then we all sit round the table and stuff ourselves!
@Kerry – it works really well and it means the host only has to pop the potatoes in the microwave or oven and lay the table and then all the rest of the food or most of it arrives with your guests! And we usually have loads as everyone brings a couple of fillings at least.
Although I love wine, I belong to a mormon book club, so no wine☹. But one person recommends a book and cooks everything themed based on that book. Then next month, someone else hosts. And so on.
Our book club works like this. The person who is hosting is the one that picked the book the month before at last meeting and serves wine/coffee/soft drinks, whatever you guys do. Everyone else brings something: sweet, salty, spicy. Works out for the host because only responsible for the drinks.
Went to one where they we’re starting “American Psycho.” They only served cocaine which was weird and made me feel uncomfortable. Haven’t been back.
P.S that was a joke. I can’t find a freaking book club anywhere. Is their like a app or what? I’ve hit up local bookstores and libraries but all they have is kids groups. It’s annoying.
A friend of mine started up our group (in Leeds, UK) about 14 years ago! Why not start one up yourself and mention it to friends/at work…I’m sure you’ll soon get a group together. Good luck! X
Sadly I gave up my book club. I was the only one that worked full time and had a young family. Found I didn’t have time to read my own books. We had wine and nibbles
we each bring a course and try to mirror food that might be mentioned in the book. We alternate hosts and the host is exempt from bringing anything to the next two meetings. We have had some great meals!
Question…..I never joined a book club because I felt I may be obligated to read a book that I didn’t want to read. How does everyone deal with that issue?
1st rule of our bookclub is life is too short to read books you are not enjoying. 2nd rule of bookclub is come along regardless if you read the book or not. Only about 5 mins of our 2 hour meeting is about the book. The rest is about us chatting about husbands, kids, work, holidays, friends etc and eating and drinking.
We rotate, each month someone hosts and provides the full meal, apps and beverages. It ranges from home cooked from scratch to store bought and take out pizza…..we are flexible!
Bite sized quiche, cucumber cream cheese sandwiches (on the tiny square bread), tricuits with various toppings, stuffed mushrooms, I have a delish recipe for blt deviled eggs!
We do Book Club here in Florida once a month and the food can be anything from just desserts to a full fledged meal! We are six people and get to strut out stuff twice a year. My daugter book clubs in Philly and I had the pleasure of being a visitor one month – the spread was a great and elegant antipasto! Cannot beat a good book and good food!
At one of my book clubs everyone brings a dish. We eat first and then discuss the book. Another book club meets in a synagogue and I bring cookies and/ Danish and the place provides coffee and tea. and a third meets in an assisted living facility which gives us drinks and cookies. The last one meets in the clubhouse in my community, and then we go out to lunch. Personally, I prefer the one in which everyone brings a dish. The hostess coordinates the menu so no two people bring the same dish.
Where are you I’m Florida? I live in Lake Worth and often travel to Delray and Boca Raton. On the second Wednesday I lead a discussion from January to March in Jupiter. That club serves breakfast.
I actually dropped out of the only book club I ever joined because it became more about the food and wine, how it was served, who was going to bring what food next, and complaints about members sitting out on the month that was their natural food rotation. I wanted to read; they wanted to eat.
Our bookclub has 8 members. We meet in the private lounge area of a local community centre. We meet after dinner so it’s just wine and nibbles. Half our members cater 1 month and the next month the other half cater. It’s a bit of put luck, but most of the time we don’t double up. I tend to make a dip and bring nuts or cheese and crackers. Another member tends to bake a cake or slice. Other members bring a bottle of wine and chocolate.
Appetizers and desserts. Also depends on time of meeting. If it’s around dinner time it’s actual meals etc. if it’s after dinner it mainly desserts/small apps.
Chocolate or something sweet that is finger food
Can’t go wrong with chocolate ??
Food themed to the book we’ve just read.
Like that idea??
I’m the dessert girl so I’m usually on Pinterest looking for stuff. Try peanut butter/caramel pound cake, it’s on http://foodnetwork.com/ this was a book club fav!
Yum!?

Love this idea!!

@Jane Sounds good to me. ???
Each person who hosts makes up their own menu. We’ve had a nachos bar, pizza and wings, salads and finger foods.
Nacho bar is such a good idea!!
Cheese, crackers, olives, salami, something sweet
Yes, all sounds good!
Although I love wine, I belong to a mormon book club, so no wine☹. But one person recommends a book and cooks everything themed based on that book. Then next month, someone else hosts. And so on.
Our book club is essentially the same.
Yea, I like thia idea ?
Fruit, finger sandwiches, dessert, and of course wine and cheese ?
Gotta have the wine?
Our book club works like this. The person who is hosting is the one that picked the book the month before at last meeting and serves wine/coffee/soft drinks, whatever you guys do. Everyone else brings something: sweet, salty, spicy. Works out for the host because only responsible for the drinks.
I’m going to suggest this, thank you!
Went to one where they we’re starting “American Psycho.” They only served cocaine which was weird and made me feel uncomfortable. Haven’t been back.

I couldn’t find one either, so I just started my own and told my friends to come over. 5years later….?
There is no book club near me neither x
Fruit. One lady went all out and made cake pops and other cute dessert things that went with the book we read.
Love fruit in the summer especially. ?????
I do too!
Can’t go wrong there! ??
Lol
Anything from Trader Joe’s =)
Seriously. What would we do without TJ’s?
Sadly I gave up my book club. I was the only one that worked full time and had a young family. Found I didn’t have time to read my own books.
We had wine and nibbles
Yea, it’s hard sometimes??
We always had a sweet thing and a savoury thing. Now we meet at a restaurant where we have cake or dessert and usually a coffee to finish the night.
We’ve done that too, it makes for a good change!
some of us have husbands that get out of bed early in the morning and so it was far to them.
@Ann I get that, I had little ones. ?
Our host chooses main dish and the rest of us bring complimentary sides.
Less pressure on the host, sounds good. ?
Samosas ??
Sounds good to me. ??
Cut up fruit. Raw veggies and dip. Stuffed mushrooms (to die for)! Mini muffins. Cookies. Mostly finger foods with lots of toothpicks! ?
Yum, that all sounds good?
We have brunch! Yesterday’s was quiche and fruit.
LOVE quiche!
we each bring a course and try to mirror food that might be mentioned in the book. We alternate hosts and the host is exempt from bringing anything to the next two meetings. We have had some great meals!
Oh wow, that’s a good idea as well. Thank you!
We typically go to coffee shops, but at times individuals host.
I like mixing it up as well!!
Watermelon, feta, basil skewers. Drizzled with balsamic!
I’m totally going to make these. Yum, thank you!
Wine and chee– oh! Um. Cheese and wi— sorry. Um. Let me see… Vin et fromage?
People eat at book clubs?
Each member takes turn hosting and picking the book and menu. We sometimes have mimosas!
Eat, wine, discuss, more wine. Lol But we do get through all the questions. ??
if there is food in the book it’s the perfect menu!
Yes, love that idea! However this book had way more alcohol than food. ?
Question…..I never joined a book club because I felt I may be obligated to read a book that I didn’t want to read.
How does everyone deal with that issue?
There’s a new book every month. You can sit out a month. They’re not the boss of you. ?
1st rule of our bookclub is life is too short to read books you are not enjoying. 2nd rule of bookclub is come along regardless if you read the book or not. Only about 5 mins of our 2 hour meeting is about the book. The rest is about us chatting about husbands, kids, work, holidays, friends etc and eating and drinking.
@Tara so there’s no fighting, right…? Right?!
@Jef about what?
@Jef oh, I get it now. Sorry. I’m a bit slow 😉 Nup, no fighting.
I don’t think we should be talking about this..?
Is there anything else? Lol fruit cookies, chips and dip. Cake
????
We rotate, each month someone hosts and provides the full meal, apps and beverages. It ranges from home cooked from scratch to store bought and take out pizza…..we are flexible!
Pinterest is my friend when trying to figure out my menu. I work full time and always choose something i can make the night b4 or crockpot
Pinterest! ??
We used to meet at the pub… so beer or whatever was going…
Fun!!?
@Kerry except
I was so busy at work I never finished my books in time!!!!
I read a lot and would love to join a book club, if anybody is near Edgware or Stanmore and preferably during the day that would be great.
Hope you find one!!?
Just dessert for mine
Never a bad thing lol ?
I always cooked up the food to reflect scenes in the book. For example: GWTW was BBQ based on the Twelve Oaks scene.
Deanna Bourn, what did you serve for Silence of the Lamb? Lol
Bite sized quiche, cucumber cream cheese sandwiches (on the tiny square bread), tricuits with various toppings, stuffed mushrooms, I have a delish recipe for blt deviled eggs!
Love the sandwich idea, thank you!
People still do book clubs? That’s awesome to hear. I always wanted to but never did.
oh they sure do!!
LOVE my book club, have read some amazing books!!
We do Book Club here in Florida once a month and the food can be anything from just desserts to a full fledged meal! We are six people and get to strut out stuff twice a year. Yum, that sounds really good. And yes great food and book are the best. ?

Wow, that’s so great that you have more than one book club. Thank you for your ideas?
We have a couple of rules as well. But always wine and treats!
Where are you I’m Florida? I live in Lake Worth and often travel to Delray and Boca Raton. On the second Wednesday
I lead a discussion from January to March in Jupiter.
That club serves breakfast.
Not in FL, but if I do go there I now know where to go for book club on vacation! ?
I live on the Gulf side – it has been fourteen years and I do not regret one moment.
Looks like a wine club too! Win/win
books
I actually dropped out of the only book club I ever joined because it became more about the food and wine, how it was served, who was going to bring what food next, and complaints about members sitting out on the month that was their natural food rotation. I wanted to read; they wanted to eat.
We have been meeting in cafes and wine bars for 25 years.
Never joined a book club … could I be missing out on something ….. ??? xx
Wine and cheese apparently!
…or coffee
Cake & fruit
Our bookclub has 8 members. We meet in the private lounge area of a local community centre. We meet after dinner so it’s just wine and nibbles. We are 8 in our book club, we take it in turn to host. The host chooses the date, the book, the menu and the wine (of course).
There are things other than wine and cheese? Who knew???
We do dinner out and discuss over dinner.
Appetizers and desserts. Also depends on time of meeting. If it’s around dinner time it’s actual meals etc. if it’s after dinner it mainly desserts/small apps.
Yea, we have that as well. Even did breakfast??
I never joined a book club bc it sounds like there may be people there.
That is way too funny! ?
Chocolate! There is chocolate! Lol
OK. NOW you’re talking!!!!! ?
Chocolate eaten while you’re reading has no calories.
Fruit
