Schindler’s Ark is semi-historical (the book behind the movie Schindler’s List). As for non fiction, I’m sure there are memoirs.

There’s a book, it’s for middle schoolers, but I found it very intriguing, about a Nazi Youth who thought for himself and didn’t fall for the Nazi propaganda. It based on a true story and the title is “The Boy Who Dared.”

Edit: Apparently the author also wrote a non-fiction children’s book called “Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler’s Shadow”

The deaths head chess club is good. Not 100% set in the camps bc it jumps between during and after the war but a good half of it takes place there. It’s a great read

Listened to Sir Martin Gilbert years ago on BookTV. He spoke on his book, The Righteous. It was fascinating. Maybe there’s a video of it available on YouTube.

This is an amazing book …however, I would suggest the whole trilogy

1
Karen

The entire trilogy is great — however, as I understand it, only Night is autobiographical, while the other two are fiction. Night, to me, was all the more powerful and horrific as it’s his own factual account.

I don’t know if this is what you’re after on any level, but Arthur Hertzberg and Michael Shermer wrote a great work of critical historiography called ‘Denying History’. It’s a brilliant deconstruction, illustrating the fallaciousness of Holocaust Denialism.

There is an incredible play called Bent it’s about LGBT* holocaust victims. Shattering. Also Maus, which is a graphic novel but I found it an incredible read, especially for how mult-generational the effects were.

I also had the privilege of meeting a woman, who survived. (Trigger warning for sadness and violence) She was German, but her brother was mentally handicapped in some way. Her whole family went into hiding to protect him, but they were discovered and ended up in a camp. She was six and the only survivor of her family, but the soldiers beat her badly enough to break both her legs and hips, but she had spent her life traveling and singing and sharing her families story. I was only a kid when I met her but her face and voice is burned o to my memory. She was an incredible woman.

Ann Frank’s book entitled Diary of a Young Girl. She lived in Denmark during Nazi occupation and lived underground protected by a Christian family until discovered and sent to concentration camp, never to be heard from again, she kept a diary of her life in hiding. Also, might want to look up the author Martin Gilbert. He has written many books on Holocaust and by many is considered the leading historian of the event as well as the early years of the state of Israel. .

Herman Wouk’s Winds of War and War and Remembrance are fictional tales of that time in history. Excellent. These novels don’t focus totally on the Holocaust but on the entire era. Poignant and painful at times. Sophie’s Choice is a gut wrenching account of one woman’s journey through the camps. Playing for Time — about musicians who survived because they played their instruments to entertain the officers. QB7 by Leon Uris — published in 1970 — later became one of the first mini series on television — another gut wrenching novel.

‘The Rise and Fall if the Third Reich’ by Airie Neave is an amazing book about the whole period; looking into the family background of Hitler, German economics and society, through to the Nuremberg Trials … in which Airie Neave acted as a lawyer (I may be wrong).

It used to be a study text for undergraduates and senior students, but it’s well written and a good read.

If you’re interested in historical investigative journalism I would highly recommend IBM and the Holocaust. Same author as War Against the Weak.

Read the descriptions. I couldn’t believe I had no idea that this even happened on US soil. Basically solidified that eugenics began here. I prefer reading fiction and novels but both of these books while long, changed my life. As. Jew, I’ve read my fair share of Holocaust books, but these were different.
