No, I take them off when I’m reading but I save them for putting them onto the bookcase. They are dust covers, after all!

No, I love them! They make me think of reading library books when I was little and feeling the plastic-y clear dust jackets they put over the hardcover dust jackets haha. Now a lot of the library books I tend to get are soft cover but still love finding those few with the dust jackets

Yes, especially if I get them from the thrift store or Dollar tree the dust jacket is usually messed up anyway

Yep, I take them off, put them aside. Never to use again. Seriously I feel guilty throwing them away cause you know, it’s part of the book…? but I eventually do.

My son does. I find them all over the house and set them aside to put back on when it gets shelved lol. He has weird texture issues. We’ve had to put packing tape over a few paperbacks because the covers felt funny and skeeved him out. He isn’t autistic or anything…. just can’t stand weird textures.

I remove them when reading, and if they’re particularly unattractive I usually keep them off. I actually have a basket on one of my bookshelves that is dedicated to (and quite full of) dust jackets.

I don’t throw them away, but I take them off while I’m reading the book.

I remove when reading and put it where the book was on the shelf to hold it’s place. If the book was used and the dust cover is messed up I will toss. It really just depends

I’ll admit, if I’m thrift shopping, unless it’s an amazing deal (like ten cents) I won’t buy a hardback that’s missing the dust jacket.

I take them off when I’m currently reading the book. But when I’m done I put it back on. Helps protect the book.

No. I take them off while reading because they’re so annoying.. or sometimes I tape them down so they don’t move while I’m reading. But I tend to buy all paperbacks bc of this same reason..

*Disclaimer: No judgement just an opinion*
I work in a local bookstore and last week I found a cover in the garbage behind the register. I couldn’t BELIEVE anyone would throw away a cover so I pulled it out and left a note asking if it was intended. Turns out a customer bought the book and didn’t want the cover. Personally I can’t fathom that….it was painful seeing this poor cover in the trash ?. But I know not everyone is the same.

I usually keep the cover on my bookshelf while I read the book. When I’m done, I’ll place the cover back over the book and onto the shelf.

i know some dont collect for value of the books and most books arent worth much (except for the story inside) but a missing dust jacket takes about 80% of the value away from a book.

I am not a fan of hard back either! But it was one of those order online, get the one they give you. I just cant stand them lol. My mom is staying with me right now, she cleaned house and I see she set the cover on the counter. I threw it out lol

Nope l love hardbacks but l do take them off when l read. If its possible l get the books that still are hardback ( last longer) that have the cover printed directly on the book itself.

Depends on the design of the cover and book
I think most books look better without it
But if the cover is nice enough I leave it on

Or they end up in piles w all my other “important papers”.

0
Kaiti

@Nicholas yesss. Mine always get squished by piles of “important stuff” ?‍♀️

0
Nicholas

It’s a horrendous “filing” system. ” yes, I do indeed have that receipt/document/bubble gum wrapper, it’s right HERE (grunting as I lift a stack of random papers)”. Then I have to go through it all. I DO, however, occasionally go through it and toss stuff. It’s not like a ” hoarders” worthy collection of stacks. Just one.

Hell no Lol I love them. Sometimes I’ll take them off while I’m reading it if it keeps sliding off.
But with that said, there’s no shame in it. It’s your money and your property. I hate when people shame others based on what they do with their own property. It’s not like you’re throwing away someone else’s or a library’s ?

Why would you throw away the dust cover from your hard cover book. The key word is DUST, to keep it off your book! I take them off while reading then put them back on. Plus if you trade or sell the, the gist of the story is on the cover. I hate it when they don’t put the gist of the story on a book! In fact sometimes I don’t buy a book just for that reason! I want to know what the book is about before I buy it.

1
Reply
Amber

@Sarah I usually throw away the damaged ones like the books I got at Dollar tree s while back had cut into the front of the dust jacket and into the cover of the book slightly so o ended up throwing them out because they were all cut up anyway another few I bought at a chairty thrift store for under 50c. Each had ripped and wrinkled jackets and one had a suspicious stain so they were tossed as well.

0
Patricia

Sometimes due to marketing, the dust cover doesn’t match the plot at all. I set it aside if it’s a distraction.

I have a real bad habit of losing jacket covers….I take them off so I don’t rip them while I’m reading but then I don’t always get them back on the book when I’m finished 🙁
