I live in a retirement community and sometimes when I want to go have a lunch, I might go to our restaurant, but when I do someone always comes and sits with me. hen all I want to do, is sit and eat my lunch and read my book!
I did it in college every weekend. I was a history major/bookworm in Seattle while my boyfriend was an Army officer stationed in NE Kansas. It was either a book or the Sunday newspaper.
Yes and I have felt perfectly comfortable. It’s a great thing to do. Many times I travelled to conferences and would always enjoy going to dinner by myself with a good book. So fun and so worth it. I think some people may be to self conscious to do this but I never felt that way. Jayne
Same here. I always carry a book so that I can read rather than just waste time waiting when circumstances require that I can do nothing else constructive.
I took my book w/ me to a meeting this week. I arrived 30 minutes early on purpose so I could read (if I stayed home and read before I left, I would have lost track of time and been late). But my plans were derailed by other early birds and the facilitator who forced conversation. Grrrr. I would have stayed in my car and read if not in Texas and 100+ temps.
I danced with a book while learning how to swing dance. Nobody noticed I existed when I raised my hand when they asked if they’ve never done swing dancing before. It took them five minutes to notice me.
And to the dr, the dmv, the car garage, the bar, the hair dresser, the laundromat, the car wash, the dog salon, the drug store…. Yeah….we’re tight like that!?bff
Now and then, I love to take myself out to lunch or dinner, and I read happily while I eat. I shall now refer to this practice as “taking my book out to lunch/dinner.” ?
Guilty as charged. Especially as so many “friends” are now more interested in their phones than in conversation. I would rather “converse” with a book than look at the top of someone’s head.
I had a friend who critized me for reading while I waited for her for lunch. This same “friend” then spent most of the time on her phone chatting away. Needless to say that was the last time I had lunch with her.
You know how in Internet TV commercials they show an entire family sitting around in the living room, each person off in their own world on their phone or game controller or whatever device, as if they weren’t in the same room? In my house, we’re that way with books. 😉
That’s how I grew up, everyone reading. To some degree, that’s how my husband and I are today. I don’t think my kids and their families read as much as they could.
That sounds heavenly! Right now I’m a stay at home/homeschooler, so it’s not easy to do. But I do need to take time for just me. I’m such an introvert, and feel drained when I don’t get time to be alone with my own thoughts. ?
Almost all the time, but brunch is usually too noisey – I like going early while the coffee’s still fresh. The staff knows me now and always wants to know what I’m reading. <3
magazine
Brunch, the beach, the park, dinner, wine sipping……..
More often than I would like to admit
All the time! Its like bringing a new friend ❤️
I have eaten alone many times and prefer it because I can read and not be considered rude for ignoring a lunch/dinner date.
This!!!!
I’ve been known to give some books a big hug!
No
I’ve done that before!
Yes!!!
I have..
Yes!!!! I love that time to myself!
I always have a magazine or a book because I don’t have anyone, friends or family to go to lunch.
??♀️??♀️
Most definitely, books are great company. ❤️?

I’m alone 95% of the time if I’m not a work. I go through life with a bag containing a knitting project and a book.
Sounds lovely!
I take a book everywhere. I have had many wonderful meals with a book.
I always take a book with me if I will be eating out alone. It makes for a very nice mealtime.
Yes! My books never get distracted by a cell phone! Lol
Yep , and had a great time! Fed my body and my soul!!!
Yes

I call it my quiet time.
Yes. It is no diffrent than my husband and I sharing the Sunday paper over coffee and then discussing what we read over brunch.
Every Sunday!
No, I wish though.
I took mine to the dentist. Generally, I have to wait some time before he gets to me. Sometimes I only read a few pages, but I have read over sixty!
Yes 🙂
Absolutely
I usually take my book to breakfast …
All the time! I carry a book everywhere I go.
More often lunch?
Just like a friend. ?
It do I do!
I’ve taken mine to a bar. Just sit in a corner, drink my beer and read my book. Love book dates like that!
Yup
I danced with a book while learning how to swing dance. Nobody noticed I existed when I raised my hand when they asked if they’ve never done swing dancing before. It took them five minutes to notice me.
Take mine to Starbucks whenever I can…
I’ve taken a book to a bar more than once!
I took my book and baby the other day. It was nice and quiet

With a book, you are never alone.
And to the dr, the dmv, the car garage, the bar, the hair dresser, the laundromat, the car wash, the dog salon, the drug store….
Yeah….we’re tight like that!?bff
But always a book….not a phone or pad, a proper book of paper pages!
@Sarah have to say I use books or my kindle, depending on where I bought/borrowed the book.
I simply carry a BIG purse so that my library books will fit too!
Now and then, I love to take myself out to lunch or dinner, and I read happily while I eat. I shall now refer to this practice as “taking my book out to lunch/dinner.” ?
Yes!
Once in a while, if I’m on my own on a Friday night, I take a book out for Chinese. 🙂
I have taken a book out for a meal a million times! I love to read while I’m eating.
I remember reading a Harry Potter at Coronado Island.
I’ve taken a book everywhere I go.
Almost every lunch I have had in the last few years!
I eat alone quite often. So have a book or Magazine with me at all times.
Often!
Yup! Sometimes better company.
yes!
Yes, and dinner too!
yup
A whole lot of times. Glad so.eone else, does this too.
I take a book to lunch with me every day! 😀
you mean taking a friend was an option?
No
When I traveled for my job, I always took a book to supper so I wouldn’t look so conspicuous eating alone.
I usually keep a book in my desk at work just for carrying with me to lunch.
Yes!
All the time.
Yes
When I worked that is what I did everyday kept me sane
All the time. Panera and a book on the weekends.
I take my book to lunch every day. Of course, I work in a small office so there’s just me to go with to lunch. But, I’d rather read than most things.
That was kind of my point (See my comment above).
Yes
I take a book EVERYWHERE I go. I once got made fun of, on a date, because there was a book in my purse, lol.
All the time ?
taking people is an option?
Definitely!
yep
Embarrassing that sometimes I like my books more than people.
I could do that!
Just this morning!
All. The. Time. I love my frends and family but sometimes I need to be surrounded with people and not engage!
Yep
most Saturdays
Yep, often.
I always take my Kindle to Panera when my house is being cleaned. Happiness!
but my BOOK IS my FRIEND haha
Yes all the time!!
my book is a friend
You can get Kindle on our phone. Then you just look like one of the million people staring at their phone.
Not to brunch. But I’ve gone to bars with a book.
Just last week I took my book out to dinner. 🙂
So did I, Kristin.
Sometimes the book is better company.
Sometimes?!?!
The book doesn’t nag or criticize you over every little thing.
@Sarah and seldom bores you!
I hardly ever leave the house without something to read.
Me too. I almost feel undressed without one!
What is that cheesy goodness?
All…the….time. I consider it my secret indulgence. Only chance I get for quiet alone time.
@Sarah Cincinnati Chili!
Always
Over 400 liked this post. Suddenly I feel less alone. Thank you.
TBH, I thought it was a meatloaf with a ton of cheese on top.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, if need be.
YES, especially my audiobook
If I’m going to have a meal in a restaurant, alone, I WILL have a book.
Brunch and book. Perfect together
Yes! And to breakfast….or lunch….or dinner.
Always
I keep a book of short stories in my car in case I get stuck in traffic because of an accident or doctor’s office, etc.
@Sarah That would be good, too.
Many times! A chance to breathe!
I do this usually for lunch often. It’s my “me time”.
And lunch and dinner.
