I love a wide range set here (GB), all over the continent, the Scandinavian authors, many set in the USA & Canada.what I DO strongly dislike is American authors who write books set in Britain with British characters who get it horribly wrong!

oh yes pet hate, especially when very basic research would have provided answers.

Ditto for British writers who set their books in other countries and get it wrong 😉

Susan

@Lesley indeed, yes.

I particularly hate the tendency to use Americanisms in British books, but then I am old, boring and pedantic 😉 ‘Detective’ is not a rank in the UK. The form or address would normally be Detective Inspector, for example, or Inspector, but not correctly Detective.

Donna Leon is great, her books are set in Venice.

Reading books set abroad should be okay provided you have the appropriate clothing – pour instance, The Wallander books and most Nordic Noir, can be quite chilly…

Weird but I only like books set in the USA. I’m English though

Try @Quentin‘s Sergeant Gunnhilder series, set in Iceland. Terrific.

The location isn’t necessarily important to me as long as the book doesn’t turn into a travelogue.

It hugely depends on how they are written- for instance I really enjoyed the early Patricia Cornwell books (feel they went off after about book 8-9). Generally love Scandinavian crime fiction. How the language is used is key but also the general quality of the book

don’t forget my books, set in Portsmouth and occasionally in London, but they can be read in a Scottish accent to great effect and, I am told, it can enhance even more the enjoyment for the reader – and I quote, Mavis Scuttle of Fyffe bananas, “Ahh stop yer ticklin’ Jock”…just sayin…

Thanks, Sharon.

I think crime fiction should have plenty of texture and atmosphere, which is why I like the northern (Scottish and Scandi) writing too.

I first started reading the Maigret books as a teen and had no trouble with Parisian place names. When I moved on to the Martin Beck novels, I admit to having trouble with Swedish place names though. I just ignored the awkward names and enjoyed the stories.

I do, but I was hoping others didn’t as I’ve almost finished a Brazil based title with a UK protagonist. I’ve read some fantastic tithes based in the US, Au, Netherlands, and Mexico though.

Funny enough I started reading Crime fiction with Jo Nesbo’s The Snowman. This got me hooked on Scandi Noir (, horrible term I know, sorry) like Indridasson, Mankell and The Martin Beck books. It’s only recently that I have discovered Ian Rankin. There is something about the landscapes of Scotland and the Scandinavian countries that lend themselves to murder fiction!
