Um, isn’t that a series about an incestuous romantic relationship? The kid’s about 12…

2
Dee

Well there’s more to it than that but that is in there.

Cadence

There’s a lot of abuse in that, I’m not about censorship, but that series is meant for an older age group.

1
Kelli

I was about 12 when I started reading VC Andrews.

2
Dee

Well my mom thought I was mature enough to handle it, so…

0
Cadence

That’s well and all just making sure she knows what she’s giving her little sister. We can’t assume her parents would be okay with it. When i was that age my sister gave me a toby mac CD (a CHRISTIAN rapper lol) and my dad was livid. He said that all rap is “too provocative”. Some parents shelter, it happens.

Kelli

@Cadence As a parent, I completely understand.

Dee

I was just answering the question of what series I was reading in 7th grade.

0
Kelli

I completely fell in love with the “Heaven” series. But, I also read Julius Caesar that year too.

0
Cadence

Aw lol Dee, I’m not trying to insult you really. All but two of the things I listed my parents actually approved. Harry potter, storm thief , LOTR, and anne of green gables were read and kept at school because i borrowed them from friends. My mom still thinks i read HP in high school lol.

0
Kelli

@Cadence I wish I had better recommendations for you. My son is 19. My niece is 12 and loves the Warrior Cat series.

1
Dee

I think I forget how young 7th grade was/is. I was reading Stephen King by then too.

2
Cadence

Lol Kelli, it’s all good I’ll read anything I’m half way done with wheel of time right now

1
Diane

I read Flowers in the Attic in middle school, it was the early 90s . . . Those books were really popular then.

1
Cadence

@Kelli my students love the warrior cat series! That and percy jackson.

1
Dee

@Kelli Heaven series is also a fav of Andrews.

1
Grace

SE Hinton and all her books. Not exactly a “series”, as only two of them are actually meant to go together (have the same characters), but all are loosely similar/related.

1
Reply
Lindsay

@Grace YES! I was also introduced to what is now the giver quartet in 7th grade. It was a stand alone back then.

2
Grace

I read The Giver right around 5th grade, I believe, but yes–I loved all those classics!

Books did not have a “young adult” category per se when I was in the seventh grade. I was reading Jean Auel and John Saul then. I did like reading Christopher Pike, but he was not child friendly either.

I think my favorite part of it is that Prince Charming has multiple ex-wives. I found it funny.

Tana

Sounds like I need to check it out

Let me know what you think. I believe there are eight books is the series.

My school’s library had lots of pretty old books, so I think I was mostly reading Albert Payson Terhune’s books back then.

But some books I’ve read as an adult that she might like are:

The Dark Is Rising series
The Felix Brooke series by Joan Aiken
anything by Cynthia Voigt, but especially the Tillerman series and the Mister Max series
The Luck Uglies by Paul Durham
The Futhermore series by Tahereh Mafi
The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander
The Peter Nimble series by Jonathan Auxier
The Young Wizards series by Diane Duane
Zahrah the Windseeker by Nnedi Okorafor (she also has a series Akata Witch which I didn’t like as much, but I’ve seen a lot of people praise it)

I read a lot of mysteries back then both fiction and nonfiction. I loved historical fiction and true stories. I read Follow the River, Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume, I did a research paper on the kidnapping of the Lindburgh baby and I loved reading about the loch nest monster. I also loved Sherlock Holmes, Encyclopedia Brown, Agatha Christie, Nancy Drew, and I still loved reading books that today may seem young. Beverly Cleary’s Ellen Tebbits, Mouse and the Motorcycle. I also loved the The House of Dies Drear and The Mystery of Drear House.

I still reread these books.
And Pierce as written so many more books since- continuing within the same world.
U should go to her page.
