Wuthering Heights

v
Ulysses by James Joyce. Which is the greatest novel?
Wuthering Heights!
Why?
Dominic Jericho what the author achieved given her background, the imagery she creates, the passion she gives the reader
It is very passionate, I like that it portrays love as having no bounds.
@Dominic and that of course love is very akin to hate. I generally dislike the idea its a wonderfully romantic love story – but it’s clearly full of love.
Comedy & tragedy and love & hate, they are all branches growing from the same tree.
Ulysses is a hard read!
Life is hard to live.
I dislike them both immensely
Why?
@Jodine same here – I just got so frustrated with the characters in wuthering heights and after studying it I can wholeheartedly say I am not a fan of James Joyce’s writing generally…
I really don’t like period drama, I read a lot whilst studying for my eng lit degree & it was probably the genre that I struggled with most. I think that most female characters from that period are a bit wishy washy & pathetic…don’t even get me started on Tess of the D’Urbavilles!
I’m not a fan of James Joyce at all. I find stream of consciousness writing incredibly self indulgent. I don’t believe that anyone can read it & enjoy it. It’s sole purpose is to indulge the author.
@Lisa maybe it’s because we studied them rather than read them for enjoyment? Although I would never read either novels by choice ?
@Jodine How can anyone not like lines like these:
““O and the sea the sea crimson sometimes like fire and the glorious sunsets and the figtrees in the Alameda gardens yes and all the queer little streets and pink and blue and yellow houses and the rosegardens and the jessamine and geraniums and cactuses and Gibraltar as a girl where I was a Flower of the mountain yes”
@Jodine ? good theory… although I didn’t study WH but Joyce was painful… ironically I’ve studied Frankenstein on 3 different occasions and it’s still one of my favourite books! ?
I’ve studied English Literature at university as well, so I think it’s more to do with personal preference than being forced to read something? I’m not denying that plays a role, but to a certain extent.
Victorian literature is the reason I wanted to study English Literature. It’s my personal favourite area, the language is poetic and full of flourish, the world is on the brink of it being the modern world, so many inventions that shaped the world as we know it now. Science was the new religion. The authors could see the collapse of the old ways and the outrageousness of the social structure and they used their writing to criticise it and rebell against it.
The female characters are not as strong as we expect them to be today, but I have read quite a few modern books in which the female protagonist was an absolute disgrace to feminists everywhere.
I like period dramas but have never liked Wuthering Heights. I’m quite often a lone voice on that one.
Wuthering Heights for me, I just couldn’t really get on with Joyce. I’ve read WH several times over the years and always find I get something different from it.
I love both!
Wuthering heights!
Wuthering heights – forever favourite!

Between these two? Wuthering Heights hands down. And yes, I’ve read both. Looove WH, want to burn U.
@Martine this is pretty much my exact opinion!
I think burning it is a bit dramatic, but then again Ulysses is still the book that keeps on giving. It’s thicker, so will keep your fire burning that little bit longer 🙂
Wuthering Heights.
Wuthering Heights.
Definitely not Ulysses!
@Steph I’m with you on that one!
Wuthering Heights, the most poetic novel in the English Language ♥️
Wuthering heights is infinitely superior to Ulysses in that it is readable…
@Dawn agree!
Well it depends entirely if you want to actually enjoy reading it, or just want to enjoy boasting that you have finally fecking read it
Wuthering Heights hands down. Ulysess is really hard going. I had to read it for Uni and I hated it immensely.
Wuthering heights
Wuthering Heights! My passion to the end!! ❤️
Before the start of our third year at Uni we were advised to read Ulysses during the summer break as we would be spending quite a lot of time on it. The feeling of total dread turned into absolute fascination with Joyce’s writing. Difficult? Yes. Thought provoking? Absolutely. My degree buddy and I still talk about it to this day. Wuthering Heights is fine for a fairly easy read but I learnt far more from Ulysses
Wuthering Heights! Never made it past page one with Ulysses?
Withering Heights, hands down ❤️
Wuthers. I have managed to read it all, for a start.
That’s actually a great name for a dog, Wuthers.
Wuthering heights
Wuthering Heights! I still love Heathcliffe!
I haven’t read Ulysses, but Wuthering Heights is my all time favourite ❤️
Wuthering heights!
(But only because havent read ulysses)
Wuthering heights for sure
Wuthering heights. I found Ulysses really tough going (which I know, some people will argue, makes it a great novel!)
Wuthering Heights. I hated Ulysses.
Wuthering Heights…..Emily was a genius. I love all of the Bronte sisters works. Haworth is my most favourite place on earth.
@Jo Me too. I pass Anne Bronte’s grave most days when I walk my dog.
@Nicola I have never visited Anne’s grave, much to my shame. I have visited Haworth countless times. I loved Anne’s book The tenant of Wildfell Hall.
@Jo She’s buried in Scarborough. A nice day out. I love Haworth, used to live near there too. ?
@Nicola I’ve yet to go to Scarborough. X
I really want to go to Haworth! A pilgrimage.
Ulysses is truly awful. No pleasure in reading that AT ALL. Wuthering Heights is a masterpiece ?
Truly awful? That’s a bit excessive. It took Joyce 8 years to write, don’t you think it’s worth a little more investigation?
@Dominic I studied Joyce as part of my degree and stick by my opinion. No I don’t!! But each to their own ??
That’s like saying what tastes best chocolate or cheese? Two very different novels
Wuthering heights if I have to choose between the two.
Personally, found Ulysses to be a load of pretentious twaddle!
That’s what’s amazing about the written word though, what calls to one doesn’t call to another….
Uh, Wuthering Heights, obviously. Ulysses just seems like something you read to earn Ivory Tower points
I’ve read it several times, so I guess I have a lot of those Ivory Tower points by now?
WH all time fav
Wuthering Heights
Give up.Which is it?
Wuthering heights
Wuthering heights
Withering Heights x
Wuthering Heights no contest! Best book ever!
Wuthering Heights
Wuthering heights
Wuthering heights
Wuthering heights – Ulysses is a little too incomprehensible for my tastes! Tried three times and it’s just too *much*
Wuthering Heights, in winter with a real fire blazing in the hearth, a big mug of tea and some seriously good chocolate. Job done.
I adore Ulysses
I can’t stand Wuthering Heights so I guess Ulysses. Though, I admit, I only got any of it after I listened to it on audio books and then after an Irish mate of mine who was crazy about it explained it all to me.
Wuthering Heights – Ulysses is interminable and just no pleasure to read ?
Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights
Apples and oranges
Wuthering heights
Make that Wuthering. Not read ‘Withering Heights’ ?
Wuthering Heights!
Wuthering Heights!
Easily Wuthering Heights – cannot stand pretentious Ulysses!
Neither!!
To Kill a Mocking Bird
Ulysses. Although it is difficult to comprehend unless you are taking a college level course in Joyce. I didn’t really enjoy Wuthering Heights. It was overly melodramatic, like watching actors onstage hamming it up.
Wuthering Heights for me
Wuthering Heights. Ihave read it quite a few times. I have read maybe 10 pages of Ulysses, some day I’ll read it, if I live that long. I have read A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man though.
Wuthering heights, my favourite book of all x
I loved Wuthering Heights
As a longstanding member of the Bronte Society, take a guess … ? PS Ulysses was a tidal wave of tosh.
