For me it was “The girl on the train” by Paula Hawkins I wanted to throw the book across the room but it wasn’t my book.

Mockingjay. I couldn’t get over the explaining every inference as well as some plot-related pieces.

3
Reply
Brianna

It was like the author wasn’t into it anymore. The first two were great. I couldn’t finish it.

1
Eri

@Brianna I did only because I hoped it would get better. It didn’t.

1
Stephanie

The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. Maybe not *hate* but it was way overhyped and I found it repetitive and juvenile.

2
Reply
Eri

I liked it, but mostly the first book, and then in books 2 and 3 I realized that “Vin paused” a lot. And recap of previous information happened waaaay too often.

1
Stephanie

@Eri The same phrases are repeated over and over, and the fights scenes are exactly the same… So much repeating of the metals. And she’s way too perfect at everything

1
Megan

Elantris is one of my favorite books but it’s the only thing I’ve read by Sanderson.

1
Eri

@Stephanie I agree with all that. Very repetitive. Seems lazy actually… Wonder what happened there…

1
Eri

@Megan I’m really loving the Stormlight series. I’ve only read the first two books so far, but they’re far more interesting and complex – and less repetitive – than the Mistborn series (the only other books I’ve read by Sanderson). I’ll have to read Elantris too!

1
Megan

It was his first book. I havent felt committed to starting a series but I will put that one on my list!

1
Stephanie

@Eri I have all of the Stormlight Archive books because I keep hearing how wonderful they are, but given that I didn’t like Mistborn (the only thing I’ve read from him), I have been hesitant to start them given the time committment involved.

1
Eri

@Stephanie I could see why for sure! The Stormlight books seem different. Both my husband and I read the Mistborn books and at least the first two Stormlight books agree that the Mistborn books got annoying with their repetition of both content and language, but that the Stormlight books were way better and at points, we’d stay up way too late reading them.

I didn’t enjoy that one either. I had to skim the last couple hundred pages and read the end because I was just not enjoying it

I couldn’t ever get into it. I just kept skim reading because there was never any part that caught my attention and drew me in.

I read this when I was a teenager. I loved it back then but I can almost promise you now that if I reread it I wouldn’t feel the same way anymore ??

0
Kaitlin

Lol yeah I read the whole thing hoping it would get better, the end did but that doesn’t make a book lol.

0
Aleksandra

@Kaitlin yep. It’s true. I did like it, but now I don’t remember much of it. I just know that it was a romance because Nicholas sparks. I’m not into romance anymore lol!

0
Kaitlin

Me neither lol

0
Jessica

Don’t hate me! ?
50 Shades, I just recently tried to read it. I’m going to just because I bought all three but it is taking me forever. I should have known better tho I don’t usually like “billionaire” books ?

5
Reply
KeraQuestion author

I’m not a fan of 50 shades either.

1
Eri

I haven’t read them (not really interested) but the billionaire idea in Turtles All The Way Down was my least favorite part of that book.

1
Megan

I’m not even against billionaire stuff but I could not get through that writing lol

3
Jennifer

50 shades started out as a Twlight fanfic. Not knocking fanfics because I write a couple myself for a different fandom but if you don’t like the obsessive nature of Bella and Edward’s relationship then you won’t like 50 shades. I hated them too.

1
Amber

@Eri
I didnt make it past the first chapter

1
Jazmin

Ugh! Same here ✋? I DESPISE this series!

1
Jessica

@Megan yes the writing style throws me off as well… ??‍♀️?

0
Jessica

@Jennifer
I’ve heard that but wasn’t sure it was true… good to know.
I was ok with Twilight, not my favorite either but wasn’t terrible ?

0
Jessica

I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one ?
Makes me feel so much better ?

0
Ashlyn

50 shades is terrible, and it makes me laugh that a twilight fanfiction became such a huge franchise lmao

1
Monty

i found the story eventual kept me reading despite the poor writing. i didn’t find the writing to be all that solid.

2
Ellen

I didn’t like it either

1
Aleksandra

I’ve heard ALOT of people complain about 50 shades. Like a lot a lot. I actually really enjoyed the second and third BOOK, the first one sucked though. And all the movies are terrible.

1
Megan

Divergent series, first book was promising others seemed rushed and therefore terribly written.

6
Reply
Eri

I only read the first one – I worried that the others might not be as good… Good to know they weren’t!

0
Lauren

The third book in this series is one of the worst books I have ever read. I couldn’t even keep track of who was speaking and only finished it because I invested time in the first two. Poor decision to rush that one to press.

1
Megan

Totally agree! I was mad reading that last one bc I felt committed to finish lol

0
Kimberly

This is what more often disappoints me… books 2 & 3 of a trilogy not carrying on the momentum of the first. I did enjoy Divergent very much, but not so much Book 2 (Insurgent) and, so, I have not read Books 3 (Allegiant). The Maze Runner I thoroughly enjoyed, The Scorch Trials less so and Death Cure even less than book 2.

0
Stacy

2 and 3 were sooo bad

0
Becca

I loved the first book. Second was okay. But the third one I can’t even get close to the part where they leave the city. Watched the movie and it was okay. But so pissed alot of good characters died but the one guy I wanted to die survived.

Good to know. I may have to rethink this John Green book. Too many “good” books to spend hours reading so-so books. The only challenge being weeding out the so-so books before you dive in.

0
Aleksandra

I liked it but it was just a “regular” read for me. Nothing too special. I think it’s WAY over hyped because it’s John greens first book in 5 years.

0
Jennifer

The Girl of Fire and Thorns. I didn’t even finish it. I just got sooooo angry at it.

Becca

I got to the wedding part and I just couldn’t finish it. Maybe one day.

0
Jennifer

Okay so of these books that y’all didn’t finish? How far did you get? How far do you think that you have to read in order to judge a whole book?

0
Reply
KeraQuestion author

Before I Hate a book I finish a book just incase it gets better, of course finishing it makes me angrier. The books I don’t finish I leave with a blah feeling not hate.

0
Nicki

If you don’t care to find out what happens in the end, it’s a good indicator that it just isn’t for you. I give a book a chance of maybe 80 to 100 pages and if im not into I’ll let go.

2
Eri

I read the whole thing. :-/ I keep hoping it’ll get better…

1
Jennifer

I have only not finished 3 books in my life. And I remember every one. 50 shades #3, Girl in Pieces, and Girl of Fire and Thorns. 50 shades I kept trying to read to understand the hype about it and then I just couldn’t take it anymore. Girl in Pieces was entirely too dark for me with the self harm. Girl of Fire and Thorns was just ridiculous. I got at least 50% through all 3. I kept wanting to see if the ending was worth it. Usually the endings are the best part of the book.

0
Jennifer

Anyway I think that you should read at least a third of a book before you quit. Especially if you are going to go so far as saying you hate it.

1
Megan

Usually if I abandon a book it’s very early on, I can’t deal with certain writing styles (like 50 shades/twilight.)
I did stop Me, Earl and the dying girl half way through bc I was bored and didnt care what was going to happen, usually I power through crappy books though.

0
Elyse

@Eri I read the whole thing to!

1
Jessica

I most of the time work my way through it eventually, probably have a book I actually enjoy on the side ?.

0
Stacey

On a list like this I personally wouldn’t put a book I did not finish…

0
Jennifer

@Stacey why not?

0
Jennifer

This is a safe place

0
Stacey

@Jennifer its not that I don’t think its a safe place I just feel like I cant say I hate a book unless I actually finished it. I can say I didn’t finish it but I don’t feel I can say I hated it unless I actually finished it. Those 2 me are 2 different things.

2
Jennifer

@Stacey I like the way you think

Oh my goodness, me, too. I missed what is so “great” about Catcher.

0
Andrew

I’m proud to say I finished as well.

0
Andrew

@Kimberly I’m convinced it was a book mistakenly published and the printing house hyped it rather than admitting they screwed up.

1
Aleksandra

I read this in high school and don’t remember a single thing about it. That being said it probably wasn’t good or it would’ve stuck with me lol.

2
Christina

The Harry Potter books. I still look at my kids with a dumb look when they talk about them. I just did not like them. I tried….I tried reading out loud to my kids, reading along with my kids and reading just because. It was a no go for me.

Some of my favorites are: strange the dreamer, the astonishing color of after, the butterfly garden, little fires everywhere, anything by Jodi picoult, the broken girls

0

It did take me a few tries to get through The Hobbit but once I did, I really enjoyed it.

I don’t actually know why, i don’t know if it was because I was In the middle of my dissertation at the time, or I just didn’t feel what I thought I would.

0
Kelly

I have tried the hobbit loads. I LOVE the film’s and became really obsessed with lotr, Just couldn’t finish the book. It’s a shame really.

0
Megan

Love the lotr films but didn’t like The Hobbit ones. Maybe bc I read the book first? I’m never a big fan of film adaptations. And I’ve never read lotr.

1
Eri

@Megan I’ve done the same – read the Hobbit but not LOTR and loved the LOTR films but not The Hobbit ones. They were kinda hokey and the characters weren’t as interesting. My husband read all of the LOTR and The Hobbit and also liked the LOTR movies but not The Hobbit ones.

0
Kelly

I really had to drag my way through the lotr books. It really put me off this genre.
