There are many reasons why I love books, I can write an essay on it! But, the main reason is because it is my handy portal for brilliant adventures and new experiences when I cannot afford it in real life. 🙂

Books transport you to places you may never see and you can read about things that you may never experience…I like reading about how others deal with situations that I am dealing with like widowhood and an aging mother and also enjoy books that feature places I have been or woven in real historical facts as part of the plot… They can teach you something and make you laugh or cry…

Because they work with any light source; the access is infinitely flexible; they’re aesthetically attractive to view, to touch, to smell; they have character, imbued by their individual history as well as their content; they’re reliable; they’re easy to mend; they’re robust; they don’t depend on the latest technology; you can read alone or aloud to others – or even just to yourself, if the passage strikes you; the information in a textbook or reference book has been thoroughly checked (usually, anyway); & well-written fiction can transform not only your surroundings but yourself.

Humans are the only living beings which can put down their thoughts to be carried on to generations. Each time you read a book you enter someone else’s mind and think like them. Reading really enriches ones life.

They have always been my closest friends when I had no real ones. They never let me down and are always handy to share a thought or an opinion. They are quiet and say what they mean. Being kind of a loner it goes without saying that with a book you are never alone.

Love all these answers.. but my reason is a bit different..

I never used to like books.. couldnt stand reading. When I got into the 5th grade, my mom started dating this guy. Well before you knew it.. they were both on drugs really bad. Their friends would come over and me and my sisters was sent to our rooms.. we wasnt aloud to talk or be loud or anything. So to pass the time, I started borrowing books from the library, so I can read while I was in my room. When I got into high school, and put into foster care, I was diagnosed with severe social anxiety because of my mother and her boyfriend, and books helped my anxiety! I would read in school when I started to have a anxiety attack! We wasn’t aloud to go anywhere or have friends over, and I didn’t have any friends. So books became my friend. They became my home away from home, I didn’t have a care or worry in the world. It seemed liked as long as I was reading, I didn’t have to worry about anything and even seemed like I joined the characters in my book in their world! This is my reason! I’m not ashamed of my childhood.. it made me the person I am today! I am so glad that books where there when I felt nobody else was!!

Btw.. I am not looking for a pity party or anybody to feel sorry.. I just wanted to share my reason why I love books!!

They are my window to the other worlds, the language transports me to another dimension of life whether it be the story of another individual or the mystery of a crime. I love fiction because it gives me time off from reality. I have physical issues and through books I have learnt and discovered so many new places and cultures. Books are my solace through bad times, my refuge in times of anxiety and my pleasure when I am happy. I remember these lines from a poem about books, “my never failing friends are they, with whom I converse Day by day, with them I take delight in weak and seek relief in woe while I understand and feel how much to them i owe” ya books are pretty much my companions through highs and lows. That’s why I love them.

Originally I started reading books in my late teens as I was living in a non-English speaking country and I wanted to improve my English before going to live in England. But once I started, I was hooked … forty years later and I still prefer reading over other activities. I find books more entertaining than TV most of the time and will read whilst my husband watches the TV (usually I can descend into the story sufficiently well to avoid hearing the TV). I love reading about how an author makes people interact with one another in all sorts of made-up scenarios – the more bizarre and removed from reality the better as you then really get to focus on the social interactions (i.e. if it’s not like reality then I’ve no preconceptions). I guess that makes me a people-watcher of sorts.

I love books because they act as portals to other places, other times, and other worlds; because they introduce us to the perspectives, ideas, and cultures of others who we can never meet and may not think like. I love the way that reading requires comprehension, and thus requires we learn to understand these worlds and gain a new perspective for ourselves (even if that is ‘just’ a strengthened version of our own at times). I love getting lost in a world I imagine; one that is most likely different from the author’s, but is still inexorably connected to the narrative they wrote. I love the imagery and storytelling I see in certain authors’ works, that’s so masterful that I -can- get lost in their books from the start to the end and not think twice of it, and I love the books that make me think, that stop me in my tracks and bring me to a realization I may well have not had at all without reading them. I also love to read for the escape we get to go on, without ever leaving our couches or beds or wherever we read. That is the joy of books to me <3

And I much prefer to research with books (though modern pressures can make this difficult). With reference books, one can always trip over something intriguing & new, & which is nothing to do with your original research. Computers can’t do that.
